Charlie the Chiweenie decided to go on a walkabout this past fall. Historically, he would find a weakness in the fence and hang out on the front porch until someone let him in the house. Well, I guess he got tired of waiting and decided to go for a stroll.....which lasted three weeks. We had *everyone* in the 'hood on the lookout for him, but in vain. When he did finally surface, it was at a restaurant over a mile away. His leg and hip was shattered. Charlie is now a tripod. He doesn't try to escape anymore....

Nah, I haven't. Every time our dogs made it out the front door, we chased them and got them back.

Our baby Pug. We were leashing up our dogs to play outside and the baby ran into the road and was hit by a car. The person didn't slow down, didn't stop or nothing. Another baby Pug was stolen from us when it was in our front yard.

My oldest son's Pug did that, but he was not so lucky. He was hit by a car and some people found him in their driveway. They called my son who promptly to him to the vet to find out there was nothing they could do for him. Because the poor little guy was suffering from a broken back, legs etc, my son had him put down. We all cried for days. R.I.P. Chunk.

Yes. My one dog escaped our backyard because somebody left the gate open. This actually happened a few times. Usually she will be hanging around the house in the front yard and either we will see her out front or a neighbor will come to tell us our dog is loose. But one time, she actually left our property altogether and was walking around our neighborhood. We found her hours later and brought her home.

Yes, multiple times. One of my dogs named "Ozzy" would always run away when ever we opened the door and we would always chase after him and bring him home. One day he ran away again and we never found him. I still miss him.

He was just old. He had lived almost 20 years, which is already fairly uncommon for most breeds of dogs. It got to the point where he could no longer see and was in quite obvious pain.

My Mom finally made the decision that it was time to go to the vet and have him put down. We got a chance to hold him and say goodbye while the vet administered the shot, and even now it almost makes me tear up writing this. I felt like a piece of my childhood was being stripped away from memory.

EDIT: I neglected to read your disclaimer on how you qualified "lost". My oversight.
