Have You Ever Kept a Food Journal?

According to a recent study of 123 overweight and obese middle-aged women, methodically keeping a food journal is a very effective weight-loss strategy. Over the course of the year-long study by the Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, women who kept journals lost an average of 4% more body weight than women who did not.

“Knowing what you are eating and knowing how much you are eating seem to be the key," said Anne McTiernan, the director of the Hutchinson Center's Prevention Center that conducted the study. "For individuals who are trying to lose weight, the No. 1 piece of advice based on these study results would be to keep a food journal to help meet daily calorie goals."

Unsurprisingly, reading labels, measuring portions, and accurately recording everything you eat increases awareness of the types of foods and the number of calories you are consuming. Other strategies recommended by the study included eating regular meals and avoiding restaurants and takeout at lunchtime. Interestingly, the scientists discovered that skipping meals often backfires and leads to weight gain. They also found that women who never ate restaurant lunches lost an average of 3% more body weight than those who did so at least once a week.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Have you ever kept a food journal?

I was eating about 1400 calories a day and going to the gym 5 days a week for over a year and did not loose anything not even body fat. I took cycle classes 3 days and did the weight machines 2 days.

If I kept a food journal, I'd be doing it to gain weight, because quite honestly I forget to eat. Today I didn't eat anything until 1 PM, when my dad called me crazy for not being hungry.

Sounds like my ideal routine. I tend to graze throughout the day and eat a big meal fairly late at night.

...as part of our lifestyle change...see, "diets" (or fad diets specifically) DO NOT work on the long term. One has to change their dietetic lifestyle in order to foment lasting change. You're in it forever if you want to shed pounds, keep them off, and become healthier.

I started almost 3 years ago now, losing from 260 lbs. to 200 lbs. After some adjustments and settling in, I weigh from 201-206 in any and every month since 2009. It works.

Awareness is 90%, they are correct. But, the study is flawed because it just measure "women who never ate restaurant lunches..." implying that it was eating at the restaurant that was the culprit. Stay at home mothers do not usually eat out at restaurants, like working mothers that usually do. It is the vocation not the location!

Once I did it for a health class even though I should be keeping one all the time. I get so busy everyday that I forget to eat, then I get tired and can't keep food down even if I want to. I used to be able to eat all the time and kept my weight down, but since college...after 5 years of college (don't ask please), my 'Freshman 15' turned into 'Freshman 50' and breaking my kneecap didn't help. Lol
