Yes, I have ran over my fair share about 7 dogs 15+cats, too many squirrels to count its hard not to when they just run out right it front of you. I think the worst was a raccoon I hit at about 60mph it just exploded. you feel bad when it happens, but I had a boyfriend that told me never to swerve cuz you could loose control of the car.
I try not to kill anything unless I have to, Self-Defense, Survival, etc. and if I do kill I do it swiftly and decidedly.
This may seem corny, but I got this viewpoint from a friend and mentor who told me a story of his father. This happened in the early 50's. He told me that his father was a quiet man, and didn't speak to him all that often. But when he did speak it was usually something important, so he was sure to listen. His father was a salesman and was away from home often. But when he was at home he tried to take his son out to do something together, play baseball go to the museum etc.
They were casually walking down the street when my friend stepped on a cricket or some such bug, my friend said that he wouldn't have noticed except that it made that crunching sound. When he stopped to look, his father said watch... see how the bug squirms and tries to get away? You and I can see that it has no chance to live because it's guts are hanging out and half of its legs are gone. But the bug still tries to get away and stay alive. Then he said, son... god gave man intelligence and dominion over the earth and all its creatures, but we either do not know or have forgotten what this seemingly insignificant bug knows. You see, man will kill for the...
Yes, but I did try to avoid it.

You see, man will kill for the most petty of all reasons... anger, money, worldly goods. But this little bug has never forgotten that life is precious, and he said it should not be taken lightly, as he swiftly stomped the bug completely.
Then he said, this was an accident, but no creature deserves to die for petty reasons. If you kill, be sure you have a good reason and do it swiftly and decisively.
Later when my friend was old enough his father taught him how to be a responsible hunter, kill only what you need and eat what you kill etc. etc.
Anyhow... the way my friend told me the story, it seemed like a pretty important message, one that people should hear today.
:( In the summer when my mom and I are driving, we hit chipmunks. My mom lies to kill them because there annoying. She had a dead one in her hands and yelled 'YESS, ANOTHER SUCKER!'
I am glad I never did. That would really hurt me. My daughter accidentally backed into her puppy. It cost almost $3,000 at the vet. The dog almost died. The puppy has a limp now. What is sad her old retreiver was killed by a truck, he was the puppy's father, shortly before the accident with the puppy. She has small children, it is sad for them.
Yes, I was driving too fast and I hit and killed a beautiful cat that was darting across the road. (And I have two cats!) I never knew whose cat it was, but it was one of the worst nights in my life. My boyfriend at the time tried to convince me that some cultures believe that when an animal dies, it's not a mistake - it's that animal's "time to die". But I could never buy that. It was my fault, for driving too fast. Now, I drive much slower and keep an eye out for animals. I'll never forget that awful night.
i ran over a bird, but it straight up went under my car, not under the wheel. i looked back and it was still walking in the street, no joke. craziest thing i've ever seen.
Yes unfortunately. I was a tad inebriated, it was late and dark and I didn't see it but felt it bonk off the front of the car. It was a skunk. I felt awful and almost went back to see how bad it was but like I said I was a couple of sheets to the wind and the car was reeking from the little fella and I couldn't deal. This was like 40 years ago and I can still hear that thud. poor little thing.
In the 1950's I was a child. I remember a dog or cat was hit by a car. The neighbors called the police. Some of us kids watched the cops shoot the dog. Police did alot of that in those years to put an animal out of suffering.
It was different then. Maybe it made me stronger. As a child I went to see many dead children who died in my elementary school classes. The little boy in 2nd grade who sat in front of me. We clowned around and would get in trouble. Then he was gone. I actually saw him in the open caskit. I was three, and my mom's friend had a three year old son. We played all the time. He died having his tonsils removed. I did not see him dead, but I knew something was wrong. I just knew he was gone. Often I feel I did have too much emotional trauma for too young a child. My parents, especially my mother never made issues out of these things. We did not have special counseling or a discussion about these things. It was life.
I get that it was life and my mom had the same kind of attitude about things. You are born you live and you die. When we lost a pet it was "no big deal". And it does make you stronger but at the same time little kids even though they accept what's happened and do rely on the parents to guide their feelilngs, I think that there is some confusion in the kids mind. When I was a kid my sister and I found a dead water rat and near by her nest with 4 little babies in it. their eyes weren't open yet. We took them home, told my mom they were mice and fed them with an eye dropper for a week. My Uncle came by and announced that they were rats and my mom picked up the box they were in and marched down to the brook and threw them it. It was painful to watch because their instinct kicked in and they paddled for a while. I was so upset and she couldn't explain it to me why she was, in my eyes, a murderer. I't's dif than your cases but I would think still hard. And yes it is life.
Your stories are so familiar. My mother did not like having pets. Sometimes she was a very vindictive woman. I was the type of child who would take care of hurt birds, stray cats, etc. It must have hurt you, watching that. My mother was a very jellous person when it came to affection. She wanted it all for herself. Anything I loved she would get rid of. When I was in elementary school she would yell at my friends to go home. I was grateful for my grandparents who really took care of me. My mom would have done the same thing your mother did.
no but i saw a dead kitten on the side of the road and i screamed when i saw it and my mom freaked out cuz i scared her.i cant stand seeing animals especially kittens on the ground dead
I came close though when a deer ran out in front of my car at night but thank God I did not hit as it kept running rather then stop like they sometimes do out of fright by being accidently "shined".
i only have my permit and i was driving on back road with a car coming towards me so i couldnt swerve although the animal was already dead i felt so bad!
never hav never will and i hav a kinda funny story and a story OK one time me and my mom were driving by elk run school and my window was open my mom said hey a bunny and it ran tword us i screamed it turned around by being frightend So yea i saved a suicidle bunnys life OH YEA and again we were driving waayyyy later and a BLACK squirell runs i front of us hhey come on a BLACK squirell!! ow rare r those usually there brown were i come from and yes white is rarer but... AND U DONT CARE UR USED TO BLACK SQUIRELLS IM NOT
Yes I hit a mother Raccoon trying to cross the street in the country. I had been driving over24 hours trying to help friend out of a tough spot. of course my friend refused to get out of the car to see if the raccoon was OK. he said he was worried it was injured and would attack him.
Dog chasing my truck on the passenger side jumping up to the window every few seconds like a Dolphin in front of a Cruz ship when ...bump...bump...bump…he got sucked into my wheel well and run up under my fender and out the back.….a mess. I felt bad and the owner came out shaking his head ...I said I am so sorry ...
he says..." dam dog ...I new his chasing cars would get him one day.
