Yes, I've been in construction all my life, so it is hard to let someone else do what I already know how to do...plus it says me a ton of money.

I do almost all of them myself, and could do even more--but there's some I just don't wanna do. I *could* have replaced our central HVAC unit the other day, but chose not to on account of the more than formidable PIA factor.

My husband has always did all of our home repairs, I help him a little but not much. The last thing I did was help him hang drywall on a wall we are moving.

Considering I've worked as a handyman, carpenter and demo guy since I was 15, I'm fairly certain I'm qualified to do such repairs.

Yes! Saved a bundle and learned a lot. Demolished and remodeled my guest bath literally floor to ceiling and spent only $800. A contractor quoted no less than $2500 The bathroom was a 1980's embarrassment but now it's beautiful. Just like those TV makeovers. I'm still so proud of it.

Installed a new shower stall by myself. Have done sub-floor replacement, carpet and linoleum installation. I do my own plumbing - so far. If it needs to be done, I try to do it myself. I see no reason to pay someone else to do something that I can do -- if I can do it.

God for you! My motto is "if human hands can do it, my hands are as human as anybody else's" I remember when the most adventurous thing I'd do is paint a wall. Now I've put an addition on my house.

I like your motto :-) I always look at it as if "you don't know till you try" - so I try. I'm usually successful. Of course, sometimes it takes me longer to accomplish the job, but that's no big deal - especially not a big deal when it saves me money.

    YES .. indeed I have ..
not only when I returned to my HOME (after renting it out as I completed my Military Service Years) ..
but also once again after the ex-spouse robbed and did major damage ..

I've done everything from flooring, replacing toilets/sinks .. slinging drywall/mudding .. installing new doors .. adding garage door openers .. rehabbing my entire cabinetry (and adding new cabinetry) .. tear down and custom closet builds .. removing wallpaper and smoothing walls to paint .. (then painting walls and adding custom wood trim .. )
Just a lot of different things (including adding in the entire home the ability to connect TVs to Cable) .. changing out light fixtures .. repairing my Patios .. Replacing the old light switches with newer designs that are more 'friendly' to those with my disability ..

Learned to take care of what I have .. and maintain it myself down through the years!

When I retired I spent almost four years working on the house, which meant everything from pulling up flooring in the bathrooms and replacing it, new cabinets new plumbing and fittings etc. I did most of the major work except kitchen counter had it installed, but I did the new sink, jacked up the cabinets and reinforced than sanded and refinished, new gas top range, and installed new oven, vent hood, too many things to list but around 40k in improvements.

I would too but I can't afford contractors. DIY became a financial necessity because the house was just showing too much wear and tear and I had to do something. It takes me several weekend to do what a contractor could do in days but now I'm just so proud of what I've done and the money I've saved.

I haven't had to hire out for any major repairs yet as our house is only five years old. My husband and I did build the extension on our front deck, but now that he's disabled, there's no way I can do stuff like that by myself. And since I'm so not an outdoor type person, I've hired out for yard cleanup and mowing and to have someone finish the shed we'd started building, but that's it so far. I'm going to probably have to get someone in to do maintenance on the furnace and water heater in a month or so before it starts getting cold out.

I pretty much rebuilt & redesigned one of my parents' units (condo's?) that I lived in, in '97 but the biggest one was the three-storey bar/nightclub/function centre that I owned & ran for 8 years, until '08...bottom two floors were licensed, with a kitchen & bathrooms upon the 1st floor...I lived on the top floor for the first 6 years, & it had a rather notorious (& pretty massive) hot tub upon it, as well as the cool room & a couple of offices...was a pretty massive project, when I did the vast majority myself but I look back upon it all very fondly...pretty cool way to live my life from 26 to 34!!!
