Hawaiʻi Hawaiian pronunciation: [hɐˈvɐiʔi]) is the most recent of the 50 U.S. states (August 21, 1959), and is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean.

Hawaii’s diverse natural scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches and oceanic surrounding, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists alike. Due to its mid-Pacific location, Hawaii has many North American and Asian influences along with its own vibrant native culture. Hawaii has over a million permanent residents along with many visitors and U.S. military personnel. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu.

The state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which comprises hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles (2,400 km). At the southeastern end of the archipelago, the eight "main islands" are (from the northwest to southeast) Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and the island of Hawaiʻi. The last is by far the largest and is often called "The Big Island" to avoid confusion with the state as a whole. The archipelago is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.

Hawaii is the 8th-least extensive, the 11th-least populous, but the 13th-most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. Hawaii's coastline is approximately 750 miles (1,210 km) long, which is fourth in the United States after Alaska, Florida, and California.

Hawaii is one of two states that do not observe daylight saving time, the other being Arizona.

Yep, went there in 94. Had a great time, but I would suggest avoiding the Honolulu\Waikiki night scene if traveling with an attractive woman... unless you enjoy seeing her swarmed with hordes of horny Navy kids fresh off their ships.

I was stationed on Oahu for 2 years and about 3 months. It's a wonderful place to go to do nothing. You can do just about everything there is to do on Oahu in a couple of days. I got up one morning and drove around the Island 4 times before noon on a Sunday. I stopped everywhere of interest for at least a couple of minutes. Never got to any of the other Islands.

My dad is in his 90's and lives there. I have to go but it's no fun anymore. I remember Waikiki when it was truly a beach... So long ago... And we call it progress... Avarice and greed seem more like it...

After being there myself, my answer would be Hawaii is too dirty and was over run with Asian smoking everyplace. I don't mind who it is, If I am looking at smokers and can't even go to a restaurant without chocking. I am not going to be happy. Maine is better, green , clean and smoking is not allowed in most places.

Yes, I have been to Hawaii a few times, I absolutely loved it. I was there last year for 2 weeks and if I fly from Australia to the US, I stay in Hawaii for a few days on the way there or on the way back.

David, from Melbourne or Sydney it is 14 hours direct to LAX, to Hawaii it varies between 9 to 10 hours, depending how those winds are at 38,000 feet.

Many Australians are used to travelling long distances, if we travel to Europe, we automatically know it is about 24 hours door to door. The end result is worth it!

I found the 9hrs (inc a transfer at LAX) from Vancouver to Honolulu to be agony and the thought of anything longer than that discourages me from traveling any further. At least not in a continuous trip, I would have to schedule a couple of days layover along the way to even consider it.

Ha, look at me. Spoiled rotten to the point where a few hours misery will keep me from experiencing the greater world. I shall have to do a little inward reflection on this!

Nice to see you again Uneeq, its been a while since we talked. Hope life is smiling on you :)

Life is good, I am in New York, speaking of long fights, we left on friday evening. Had a 14 hour flight from Hong Kong to London, a little over 2 hours at Heathrow and then almost 5 hours from London to New York, again, the end result is worth it. So I am here in the USA until Saturday, arrive back in HK on Sunday and back to work on Monday. Looking forward to being here for 4th July celebrations.

I hope all is well with you and that you are enjoying the warmer weather.

Nice to hear Uneeq. Enjoy your time in the 'Big Apple', is it vacation or work related? I hope you are not sweltering too much as I understand its unpleasantly hot in the East at the moment. We've had an unusually cool year so far, which combined with deep snow packs up high has unfortunately led to some flooding locally, but I am not minding the cooler than normal temps. And life is good for me, nothing but little gripes not even worthy of griping about :)

David, Yes, I am enjoying being in NY, I have been here before so the major sights I have seen. The main purpose of the trip is to meet my possible future parents-in-law and my fiances's friends. Yes, I am engaged to Rob, who I met in HK last October, we had dinner several times before Christmas, but things did not become serious until January when we started dating. Rob has lived in HK for 10 years.

So many things to do here, not a very relaxing time, here, there and everywhere. It appears I will be a future citizen of the USA, by marriage, totally unexpected!

Well, congrats on the engagement Uneeq! Hope all goes smoothly with the future in-laws, although I'm sure it will with you being such a sweet and charming young lady. Are you guys thinking of staying in HK, or will you be settling in the US of A?

How are the temperatures there right now, I hear many are sweltering in the East at this time?
