Have you ever beaten an addiction? How did you do it? How are you trying to do it?

Jack's Pearl 2012/07/02 13:30:36
I think I've finally just come to the max with my addiction with alcohol; namely wine. It's too much and I don't like risking my health and being absent in a sense because I'm asleep from drinking too much. I've had a near brush with the police a year or so ago and luckily that didn't turn into anything, but wow! Thank my lucky stars!

Ever since being diagnosed with bipolar and taking my medications I have been doing so much better. But the alcohol problem started. Mainly because the med's I'm on take away the effects of alcohol so you don't even feel when you've had enough. Memory goes too, so you don't remember how much you've drank or what has happened after going to sleep.

I'm done. I can't do this anymore. I don't want to worry my family anymore and feel bad myself. Drinking just isn't the same as before. I just hope I keep up the resolve. Wanting to feel better about myself is a huge motivator. And I should lose a lot of weight from cutting it out.

That's a short version of my story and I wanted to share it. I hope others will share with me and we can help each other break a bad habit. I'd love to support others in becoming more healthy. :) Please, share your story. Share what works or doesn't. Right now for me, it's just a breaking point. Realizing it does nothing for me and the costs far out weigh any benefit. That's all I've got.
You!

It's good you have decided to stop drinking. From what I read it was heavily impacting your life.

I wish you the best in this journey of your life. :)

I have! :) I'm so proud of myself. I think it was less of an addiction then just not understanding what was happening to me with the meds + alcohol. Because not that I'm in much better understanding I have no taste for it anymore. I don't think I was truly addicted in the sense that I want it even if it's bad for me. I've learned all these things I it's like poison to me now. Thanks SJ!

It's actually going very well. I met with my counselor today and had a very in depth talk about my med's and how they interact with alcohol. Also, with how my med's may change me in ways. For one, she thinks I started drinking more when starting my meds because my med's cause you to want sweets. She told me to counter with a smoothy that is filling and sweet, but a healthy option. I've already been drinking more juices since quitting drinking about a week ago. So far I've been so disgusted with it all that I haven't wanted to drink. Now I know I'm lucky to even be alive from what I've done in the past. Alcohol is like poison for me. My med's are great and have helped me immensely. But understanding more about treating myself with them is critical. I'm surprised we haven't had this talk in the past. But then maybe they (Dr's, counselors) don't want to scare off patients or something. Don't want them to quit their meds. So many do. :( Anyway, I'm doing good. Sorry for the book! LOL

Yeah, meds can cause you to crave certain things and can also have horrible and even tragic side effects when mixed with alcohol. I truly applaud you JP!!
You CAN absolutely kick this to the curb ..

Addiction is not real. "Stuck on stupid" is. You are the only person holding yourself back from your goals and dreams. Let go of doing things that hold you back and you can accomplish anything. 1 year with no cigarettes and 10 years with no drugs.

I no longer smoke or drink. I was never addicted to alcohol so quitting wasn't hard. Quitting smoking was hard; I used the patch.

You are on the way to recovery by admitting that you have a problem. The next big hurdle is admitting that you need help. I needed help with nicotine so I used the patch. You may need help with alcohol.

Past that too. I just saw my counselor this afternoon and she helped me immensely just in this first meeting. We went over the med's I take individually and how they effect what I am attracted to and how they react with alcohol. It was a critical conversation and let's just say, I don't want to drink as long as I'm on these meds. Alcohol is like a poison to me and I'm lucky I'm not dead already from what I've done. On Friday I'm getting a physical and asking for a liver check and thyroid check. Wish me luck that I didn't hurt myself too much! I'll be seeing my counselor again in a few weeks after I get back from Ohio.

........... earlier in my life I smoked cigarettes, but I never developed an addiction to them, my Dad smoked all His life and ultimately died of Heart Disease, primarily due to His smoking 3 packs a day, when He died in 1983, at that point I left that bad habit, permanently behind me, I urge You, to do Your best, to stop entirely, smoking.........

I was addicted to smoking (40+ yrs). I quit umpteen million times. One day I was having one and I just quit, right then, right there. I haven't had one since (just over 4 years). No patches, no pills. I was ready and I just went cold turkey. The secret is - you have to be ready to do it. If not, it probably won't work. Good luck to you!

I quit smoking about 10 times. The last time I'd married a woman who wouldn't have dated me had I been a smoker. She caught me puffing on one at a party; it was the last one I ever tasted. My word/integrity meant far more to me than my craving for nicotine.

Replace an addiction with a new behavior. I took up jogging when I quit cigs.

I quit smoking. One day I decided to stop.

I like red wine a lot. I drink a glass almost every night after the kids go to bed. I limit myself to only one glass.

If you are truly an alcoholic you should seek help. Rarely does someone get sober on their own. Also drinking while on medication for bi-polar is terribly dangerous.

Yes, since being treated for bipolar is when my problems started with alcohol. What exactly can happen? Do you know?

It obviously depends on the medicatiion Jack's Pearl, I will take Lithium for example.
It is commonly used to treat bi-polar disorder. Lithium and alcohol usage is considered life threatening.

    Here are some others:

    * Drinking Alcohol while on Seroquel can potentiate the effects of this drug. It can lower your blood pressure to best levels. It is important to discuss this question with your doctor.

    * Drinking Alcohol with Lithium is VERY UNSAFE. Even after just a few drinks, the combination of these two substances can cause you to loose consciousness.

    * Lexapro and Alcohol act on similar areas of the brain. Drinking while on Lexapro greatly increases the effects on Alcohol. Imparing motor skills and your thought process.

***IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT DRINKING WHILE ON LITHIUM IS A FATAL COMBINATION. A FEW DRINKS CAN SET OFF THE METABOLIC DESTRUCTION WHICH LEADS TO YOUR HEART STOPPING (CARDIAC ARREST). MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM DRINKING WHILE MEDICATING WITH LITHIUM.

I am surprised your Physician didn't warn you how dangerous it can be,

Wow, I'm taking all the drugs you mention here. And no wonder I just blank out and wake up not remembering a thing. I have been told not to do it but I wasn't told the seriousness of it. I guess I took the warning with a grain of salt instead of as "this will happen to you." And my Dr. did not go into what would happen on these drugs.

I've read what each of my meds does mixed with alcohol, but none said life threatening. I need to read more, not that I don't believe you, I do. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. My meds have made my life so much better, even with my drinking. Without drinking I will do awesome! I will not drink anymore.

I hope that is true. I don't know you, but I certainly want you to be healthy. It causes unsafe drops in blood pressure, and changes in your metabolism. You are lucky to be alive. Please stick to it. You can beat this. I have seen pictures of your little girl. She needs a mommy who is healthy.
