Have you ever beaten an addiction? How did you do it? How are you trying to do it?

I think I've finally just come to the max with my addiction with alcohol; namely wine. It's too much and I don't like risking my health and being absent in a sense because I'm asleep from drinking too much. I've had a near brush with the police a year or so ago and luckily that didn't turn into anything, but wow! Thank my lucky stars!
Ever since being diagnosed with bipolar and taking my medications I have been doing so much better. But the alcohol problem started. Mainly because the med's I'm on take away the effects of alcohol so you don't even feel when you've had enough. Memory goes too, so you don't remember how much you've drank or what has happened after going to sleep.
I'm done. I can't do this anymore. I don't want to worry my family anymore and feel bad myself. Drinking just isn't the same as before. I just hope I keep up the resolve. Wanting to feel better about myself is a huge motivator. And I should lose a lot of weight from cutting it out.
That's a short version of my story and I wanted to share it. I hope others will share with me and we can help each other break a bad habit. I'd love to support others in becoming more healthy. :) Please, share your story. Share what works or doesn't. Right now for me, it's just a breaking point. Realizing it does nothing for me and the costs far out weigh any benefit. That's all I've got.

I wish you the best in this journey of your life. :)
You CAN absolutely kick this to the curb ..
Replace an addiction with a new behavior. I took up jogging when I quit cigs.
I like red wine a lot. I drink a glass almost every night after the kids go to bed. I limit myself to only one glass.
It is commonly used to treat bi-polar disorder. Lithium and alcohol usage is considered life threatening.
Here are some others:
* Drinking Alcohol while on Seroquel can potentiate the effects of this drug. It can lower your blood pressure to best levels. It is important to discuss this question with your doctor.
* Drinking Alcohol with Lithium is VERY UNSAFE. Even after just a few drinks, the combination of these two substances can cause you to loose consciousness.
* Lexapro and Alcohol act on similar areas of the brain. Drinking while on Lexapro greatly increases the effects on Alcohol. Imparing motor skills and your thought process.
***IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT DRINKING WHILE ON LITHIUM IS A FATAL COMBINATION. A FEW DRINKS CAN SET OFF THE METABOLIC DESTRUCTION WHICH LEADS TO YOUR HEART STOPPING (CARDIAC ARREST). MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM DRINKING WHILE MEDICATING WITH LITHIUM.
I am surprised your Physician didn't warn you how dangerous it can be,
I've read what each of my meds does mixed with alcohol, but none said life threatening. I need to read more, not that I don't believe you, I do. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. My meds have made my life so much better, even with my drinking. Without drinking I will do awesome! I will not drink anymore.
