Have we lost the sense of community in America?

Thirty years ago my mother was the neighborhood Kool-aid mom, always meeting the n neighbors with a plate of cookies, all mothers on our block knew each other (they had mental telepathy if any of kids caused trouble). With everyone so busy today, it seems they only communicate by texting and social networking.
What do you think?

People of different nationalities moving into the neighborhood, different races, different religions, different customs, different dress....just ...different. Some people don't accept...different...very well. Yet, this IS still America, the place of "Liberty and Justice for ALL", the place of religious freedom. Yet, in the last 20 years or so America has changed so much I hardly recognize it as the country I grew up in. And NOW, some would change it even more....a "one party system", get rid of the ones of "different" religions, "different" colors, just....different, whatever....then call those left, all,...."patriots". Like I said, America has changed. I'm still proud of it's past, but maybe not it's future!

yep. we have. Not only do I not know my neighbors, but in all honesty, I think one day I'll walk out there and find one peeking into my car to see what's inside. Growing up, my parents knew EVERYONE on the block. As people would walk their dogs in the mornings my dad would be outside waving "'morning Bob!" "Hi Alice!" Nowadays, if you pass a neighbor as your walking down the sidewak and you pass each other, most do not even nod at you.

Front porches and daily strolls were the norm when I was a child. There's really no substitute for face-to-face communication and a regular basis.

Back in the day, mom was always there. The moms had coffee/tea together, knew what was going on with all the children in the neighborhood and it seemed like they did have some kind of sixth sense.

I hate to sound old fashioned but someone has to be home with the children. Sadly, most families can't afford to do this. That's a "BIG" something that needs fixing.

As far as the texting thing goes, young people have lost their ability to communicate face to face. Both of my children have chosen to have texting removed from their phones. They both feel if someone wants to talk to them they should call and talk.

I suppose it does due to new technology and the lack of wanting to participate. I'm aware my neighborhood is like that from observation. But I'm too much of an introvert (not shy, don't get it confused. >.>) to really associate with anyone myself.

    People are self absorbed.

The street I grew up on was and still is like that. Also, there is a very tight-knit neighborhood in my city where the families are very close and interactive.

I believe there exists a big division between small country communities and larger urban ones.
