Have American people forgotten that a good number of the "unemployed" are unemployed because they CHOOSE to be?

It has been shown that the minute unemployment benefits end, most people only then find jobs!

Otherwise, you are counted as "not in the work force". Below is direct quote from
    http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_ht...

The basic concepts involved in identifying the employed and unemployed are quite simple:

    - People with jobs are employed.
    - People who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available for work are unemployed.
    - People who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force.

    Who is counted as unemployed?

Persons are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work. Actively looking for work may consist of any of the following activities:

    - Contacting:
    - An employer directly or having a job interview
    - A public or private employment agency
    - Friends or relatives
    - A school or university employment center
    - Sending out resumes or filling out applications
    - Placing or answering advertisements
    - Checking union or professional registers
    - Some other means of active job search

Just saw the report on Americans on disability and that exceeds those that are working. Wonder how many of those disabilities are "choice" made and verified as ok by the government? Can you say "economic collapse"? Here it is. It's shameful. On the other hand...when the government rules them, those have chosen to be "wards of the nanny state" due to their own sloth, be thankful you whom have chosen to work (even the most menial jobs), will not have to be told what to do, what to eat & drink, where to live,or how to live. You will be independant! God bless those who will work....and do the jobs the lazy won't do!

Unemployed because they want to be... YEP for sure! IF they are not financially independently wealthy , living with parents, have a spouse that supports them. on social security or disability in some form or won the lottery then they are the ones that WE THE PEOPLE SUPPORT ... either on unemployment, welfare, food stamps ....... aka the BUMS....... please include the Occupy bums also.....
If they are unemployed because they COULD NOT find a job then its legit but anymore ANY JOB IS BETTER THEN NONE....... These people that are REFUSING JOBS because its beneath them then they better RETHINK...... and soon.

Have Americans forgotten that a good number of the unemployed are unemployed because they literally can't find a job? There will always be a few lazy people, and always has been, but we shouldn't judge the rest based on those few lazy people.

I am unemployed because I want to be, It is called retirement after 45 years of work. If they were taking statistics though I would have been part of those unemployed because when I left work I was laid off, but rather than let them do that I had 30 years so I just retired. Statistics can be fudged anyway to make things look better or worse depending on what side of the political fray you are on.
Numbers don't lie but liars figure.........................

the requirements to be unemployed is if you are actively searching for or are between jobs. to be inactive means youre simply not part of the employment statistics

and i cant say that about most people.. but majority, if you want a job bad enough, you will get one.

I see it all the time in my business. They make more money getting unemployment checks, and working under the table for cash. No taxes, and if they get hurt, they go to emergency and tell them they did it at home. This Country has lost it's work ethics.

Absolutely, and has gotten to good to do menial work, therefore the immigrants taking over. The lazy have themselves to blame. The government is enabling the problem as well.

I think most Americans realize that there is an element of the population that has been made dependent by Welfare, etc. When I see thousands lined up competing for a few hundred jobs, I wonder what the percentages are. Have you any statistics?

No, I was looking for some national statistics. I don't think most people feel right about themselves if they're not productive, but computers are taking away jobs today like machinery did in the past. Thanks for the info you did provide.

I've never met someone who wanted to be unemployed. There are no longer decent blue collar jobs- the rabble fights over those that are still left. I don't like the idea that college is becoming a life perquisite and meanwhile the standards for graduating with a degree have fallen vastly within the last century.

NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many are unemployed because Companies are not hiring. I have over 35 Years in Retail Management, and in the navy I was a Retail Operations Management Trainer certified with Admiral's Staff at COMPHIBGROUP THREE

As such in this Position I received three Navy Achievement Medals and over 25 letters of Commendation for superior service

I taught Total Quality Control Management, and Customer Service as well as Inventory Control and Office Management. I managed a two hundred Million Dollar Budget for Retail Services. I was a human Resources Manager responsible for hiring

    *****************************... NOW THEN ************************

Now let me share with you the problem that is facing many looking for jobs and why no one wants to hire.

Managers should be able to look and project 3-5 years down the road and set goals where they want to go but Managers can't now under am Obama administration because taxes and over regulation is killing businesses.

Managers use to hire people Part-Time and keep them under 30 hours so they would not have to match benefits. It was a way to save cost because bottom line is to keep you're overhead low as you can and yet still provide dynamic Customer service.

With Obama Healthcare, now Managers have extra expenses that they will have to consider, not to mention the State and Federal regulations. Managers do not want to hire as many younger people as they did because older workers have more experience, and better ethics than many young people but in hiring older workers, they sometimes have to pay more and if they are going to do that, they want to know that they will be there any day they need them, and that they can do multiple tasks.

Obama Administration would rather have people on welfare, actually yes this is true because 1. you depend on the government and to Democrats that is power in that they can control you more than they would if you were not on the Government rolls.

Problem is that you then give up hopes and dreams to be successful and you limit future earnings

Government owes you nothing. Healthcare is not a right If you want Healthcare you have to pay for it.

Jobs are not a right either. It is not the governments responsibility to provide you with a Job it is you're responsibility to clean you're self up, look nice, fill out a resume or application, get the experience you need go to College and you pay for the cost and not the Government

WHERE IN THE CONSTITUTION DOES IT SAY THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS TO PROVIDE FOR YOU.... Oh Taxes? No! Wrong answer, Taxes pay for goods and services and they are used for the common defense of a Nation, and they build roads and used to manage Government But they are not to be used to give you you're wants.

Believe me, People are unemployed not by choice but because Obama is destroying Jobs, outsourcing them to china and Companies move out of State because over Regulations. Times will get worst and if you want the Economy to improve give the new guy a chance I am. His name is Romney

While I have met people just like what the author is describing, it hasn't been my experience that they are the majority. Not everyone wants to be unemployed. I have been one of those let go because of down sizing. Yes I was out everyday looking for work for a year with no success. I think it's those people that make the majority. Otherwise, the national unemployment rate of 8.2% would be much higher.

I think it may have just been in the wording of the question because the typical welfare lifers that are fully capable of working yet choose not to cuz its easier to sit at home watching Judge Judy and Jerry Springer while slurping their pop and munching cheetos they just bought with their food stamps are not mythical creatures. They do exist. I've met several. Lived in an apartment complex with lots of them nearby. (then I moved, thank goodness) Now please don't misunderstand, I have NOTHING whatsoever against the welfare and food stamp programs for those that truly need them. There was short time I even needed them. But they are meant as a temporary answer, NOT a lifestyle. And I think that may have been what you are getting at. If it was, then yes there are an over abundance of the "unemployed" because they CHOOSE to be.

I've met them. One guy who comes to mind is a childhood friend that I reconnected with a couple of years ago. He is (or was) a laid off truck driver who, it turns out, hates Obama for his Big Brother, Robin Hood approach to politics. The thing is, there were plenty of jobs at the time, but he wouldn't take any because they didn't pay as much as his unemployment benefits.

Some people genuinely can't find work and my heart goes out to them, but some can and just won't.
