when I sent in my rent payment - My landlord called to say she hadn't got it. Since they lived near where I worked I said I would stop and drop off that month's rent and the upcoming month (since it would be due in a few days anyway)...

When I got there 2 days later she handed me what she got in the mail that day...my missing rent check MANGLED in a plastic baggy from the post office a month late.
From that moment -I stopped to pay the rent in person -

Now I have a mortgage and it is paid electronically...

YES! For the first time in my life a letter got lost in the mail. Of ALL letters it had to be my FINAL payment to the IRS for back taxes I owed. Now I had to repay it + the additional penalties accrued. I don't usually get po'd but this 1 is over the damn top!

I would be mad as well... and the worse is - that if the PO ever finds it and forwards it to the IRS you will not get that penalty back - because the government takes and takes..and rarely ever gives back

Yes, the IRS told me that. Of all the mail why couldn't it have been a personal letter(which I still do write) instead of that IRS payment?. The people at my local IRS office are as humorless as morticians. BTW my brother lives in Norwood,MA

No kidding - and if it is THEIR fault (IRS) - and they over charge you - they won't give you the interest for all the time they hold your money - - -

    Nice area - Norwood.

The PO also told me that on occasion mail does get lost, esp when it comes hung up in the slot in the letter box. Of course they wouldn''t go look for it-I know exactly what box I dropped it in. It was a moneygram money order so no one else can cash it. It was made out to the US Treasury & you're not gonna cash that at Cumberland Farms or CVS,lol.

too bad you couldn't send the money electronically - (but then again - sometimes that gets held up too)

The IRS requires you to jump thru hoops, etc to do that. I don't use checks, use MO's instead. Anway, it's paid off, I sent the last one registered mail & it's gotten to them. Of course it messed up my monthly cash flow(I'm retired & get paid only once monthly) so I'm totally broke until Nov 1st!
