This breathtaking satellite image from NASA shows a broad view of Great Lakes ice.

I don't know about you.But it has been one of the coldest Winters in Tennessee in quite a while. With temps hovering 15-20 degrees below normal temps for this time of year. The only saving grace is that we have had little ice and snow to deal with.

Here some weather related stories, maling the news:

Two years ago was considerably colder than this one. We've had a few cold days, but most of this winter has been really mild.

In TN,we are getting almost too much rain. But the dreaded Spring pollen season should be in full-force April-May this year.I have seen some years where pollen counts are up in the thousand-plus range. And your car is coated greenish-yellow with pollen. And your having serious alleries,

The area of Michigan that I live in has been hit pretty hard. This is more like what we used to get here. I don't mind the snow but the extreme cold really gets to my old bones these days. We are way past our usual snow fall for the entire year and it's only Feb 9. Funny thing is we haven't had any major snow storms just a constant 2 to 8 inches. If we get a big one this year I believe we will break all records.

This past week is the third time this winter that I've had to spend nights in front of my fireplace and the first time since 2007-8 that I ran my furnace. Two years ago was the coldest winter since Jan/Feb of 1989, and this winter the coldest since that. A low of -10 Wednesday night/Thurs morn. More snow than I've seen in the last three combined. It's been several years since it's been cold enough to accumulate more than 6" of snow here. We are just now getting warmer to melt some of it. This is Colorado Springs, and I'm Domiciled near downtown.

When I was growing up, we had some severe winters. Those winters seemed to get milder and milder in my teens and young adulthood. I believe things are just going back to normal right now.

Climate isn't a static thing, and it never was. It is cyclic, and we've had it extremely easy for the past 30 years plus.

This whole thing really amuses me, to be honest. The arctic ice volume is growing, despite claims by the climate change people. Extent ice coverage in increasing. I really don't think that global warming is going to be a problem in the near future.

Long term though, we ARE in an interglacial period. The earth WILL grow warmed in the future. No one can claim to know just when, but you can expect it to happen.

In winter, snow is a good thing. Snow is an insulator. If you have snow lying on your roof, you have a well insulated attic, and the snow increases the R value of that insulation. You don't want to be the only house on the block with no snow on your roof - that means you're wasting heating energy.
