It was not retribution, it was the only way to get around racial prejudice in hiring. We were headed toward riots because so many blacks were denied employment due to their color. Since it is impossible to change the way people believe, the only way to ensure employment across racial lines was affirmative action.

Excellent point. In governmental hiring, I'd agree, as long as the applicants had equal qualifications.

They were qualified for the jobs they were hired for.

I'll take your word for it as I really don't know.

I have seen it in action.

I know of one instance, that of my longest standing friend, but in general I've seen no research on the topic.

I don't put much stock in studies, I tend to bellieve experience. I was in the middle of it in the SF Bay Area and experienced it.

And I put my faith in reason and do not believe specific experiences are necessarily predictors of broad trends or generalities. Objectivism requires a degree of skepticism in drawing conclusions easily.

I believe that you might find some affirmative action at NASA in the clerical pool

In my view, it told blacks (and those hiring them) that they weren't smart enough to get certain jobs on their own; and so the employers had to be "forced" to hire them.

How can anyone feel proud of themselves or their accomplishments if their government treats them like developmentally disabled children?

That's so true... what an insult to be given special, low standards to meet in order to be admitted to a college. How patronizing to have your job guaranteed by the government.

Nothing like being patted on the head and told you're not good enough to do it on your own.

They could take pride in their accomplishments after entering school or getting the job.

Really? After knowing the only reason they got IN the school or GOT the job was because the government forced the school or employer to accept them, even if they weren't qualified?
  • rand Outta' ... 2012/08/06 21:41:50

Often they were given a leg up because of their race AND because they were equally qualified, but I don't disparage my accomplishments even though I was given a leg up by my father's paying for my college education.

We disagree on this point, but I'm not here to attempt to change your opinion.

Your father paying your tuition has nothing whatsoever to do with the poll (unless your equating your father to a government that believes a particular people are too stupid to achieve anything on their own)

I'm saying that people who achieve after given an advantage need not disparage their achievements. As for the poll, I believe AA was destructive in terms of race relations, but I also believe all students should be provided with a quality education at whatever levels they can legitimately attain. That would have been a much healthier way to give opportunities to the disadvantaged.
