Hard Cider Growing in Popularity: Do You Drink the Stuff?

Hard cider, the drink of choice a couple hundred years ago, is making a comeback. Last year, sales for the fruity alcoholic beverage increased 65% in the United States. Virtually every major beer company now sells it, in addition to many artisan brewers, and it’s increasingly common to see it available at the local bar.

Hard ciders began to regain traction with the rise of microbrewed beers in the late ‘80s. However, the drink’s popularity really exploded in the last couple years—especially among millennials. Hard cider, which comes in a variety of flavor and fruit variations, is gluten free, appeals to both men and women, and is seen by many young people as “the next big thing.”

Bret Williams bought Woodchuck Hard Cider, one of the leaders in the industry, in 2003. He told NPR: "When I started with the company way back when, all [we] heard was no. People didn't know what hard cider was. Now it's gone from fringe behavior to a very small movement. But it's becoming powerful. People are incredibly passionate about Woodchuck."

In England and Ireland, hard cider makes up around 15 to 20 percent of the beer market, compared to only 0.2 percent in the United States. This means that there’s plenty of room for the market to expand. And it looks like it will. Ireland’s C&C; Group, which makes the cider brand Magners, has announced plans to buy Woodchuck for $305 million.

So, what about you SodaHeads? Do you drink hard cider?

I drink so much cider, it's a bit embarrassing. My mom and I have been trying to collect as many different bottles of cider as possible. Not super easy in central illinois, but we're getting better. Delicious!

I think it's funny that whatever is currently popular, the majority of Sodahead seems to be against it.

It used to be a lot easier to make your own, but it's nearly impossible to buy raw cider now unless you get it straight from the mill... QD, Meijer, Felpausch... all they sell is pasteurized cider anymore.

Good for You! I have two portable water distilling units and have been making distilled water for 2 years, use it in coffee and cooking. I have lost weight and feel better than ever, and it cheaper than and healthier than booze.
