Being a mother is the most challenging, difficult, rewarding "job" I have ever taken on. The benefits are infinite. Its a 'job' that never ends. You can't resign, and regardless of your child's age, you are always and forever, a 'mom'. As they grow, your role changes. Once you were in the drivers seat - and as they get older, you need to take a back seat - sit back and watch and let them drive. And if you did a good job in the formative years, if you gave them a good foundation on which to stand - while they will certainly trip and fall, they will eventually get up, dust themselves off, and move on.
I was under the false impression that when my kids became adults (over 18, over 21?) that my 'job' would get easier. Not so! Its just different. But at their age, the most difficult thing for me personally, has been watching and letting them make mistakes, and keeping my big mouth shut and my opinions to myself unless asked.
This past week, my daughter who just turned 21, had some problems. (At least she didn't break any laws!) But it was a matter of personal ethical decisions, and poor judgment. She came to me, and asked for help. (THAT in and of itself, was my mother's day gift). I was determined not to judge her or make her feel guilty, but just to guide her with a light hand. I must say that by the end of the week, she was standing tall - and actually taller than before this all occurred.
And this morning - I got the best Mother's day gift - a message she left on my face book page: "I love you very much, my mom, my best friend, my rock, my everything."
I hope that all the mothers out there have an equally rewarding day and get the acknowledgments that are so deserving.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to my diverse sodahead mom-friends - to those involved in Christianity, Pagans, Scientology, Atheists, homosexuals, bisexuals, Obama lovers and haters, etc. etc. etc.

flew to New Jersey for business this morning, so we celebrated Mom's Day yesterday.
will go to heaven soon made so sad! Actually, I'm crying! Good night, ANGEL,
I'm happy to meet you, Angel, thanks for being my friend!
I know what you mean - my son turned 25 this month. Sometimes it's hard to sit back and not give your opinion when you see them about to step off into something that you just know is going to not go well (as long as it's not going to hurt them). I've gotten better about it though. That was so sweet of your daughter to post that to you. No doubt you were walking a little taller today. :-) Hope you have a very Happy Mother's Day.
Wishing you a great Mother's Day!
What a wonderful, validating message your daughter sent to you. I'm not surprised.
Happy Mother's Day, Angel.
