Hacked!

Marlow ~ Let There Be Light 2012/03/30 02:54:35
I've been hacked. At least I think this is being hacked. My Yahoo contacts were sent some kooky message with a link to where to "earn easy money." Is someone getting into my Yahoo account considered being hacked? Do they have access to the rest of my computer?

What should I do? Should I contact my internet service provider or Yahoo? I don't even know how to contact Yahoo. I'd hate to cancel my Yahoo account since many people have that address.

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Can someone give me guidance?
You!

That easy money thing is a scam that has been going on for as long as I have been online, but it is usually one user. Mr. Steve posted some interesting info on this page that tells a lot about Yahoo. To me, information like that is like gold. Thank you Mr. Steve if I didn't say so below.

Keep a close watch on your computer's behavior--it sounds like your Yahoo acct may have been hacked--someone had to get hold of your contacts. I contacted Microsoft for advice but in my case it was the whole computer. Should your computer begin to deteriorate, take immediate action--Microsoft is a mixed bag--I got one excellent rep and one I could almost call a sabateur. Also if you get more strange messages. They have access to whatever you do--password protect everything (it's a good idea to change all your passwords too). Funny how they go for Yahoo first. And get anything important off the computer ASAP. I also avoided most sites. Much depends on the hackers skill level. Mine was so poor at making fake pages that it was easy to spot. But do not count on that.

I have to close all my accounts and change my identity unless I can get another computer (acc to Microsoft). Keep me posted--I will share what I learn. But don't close any accounts until you are sure. There is so much I could tell you, and if you see more evidence of same, I will. You know how to reach me, since acc to all the psychologists on this site, I am a liar. I don't need that and will be hesitant to come back for more. I lost so much and to have it all boil down to liar from someone who knows ...

Remember the CAPS. I am willing to help as much as I can after what I went through and I am still learning.

Donna's advice is good too--definately follow it, but a lot can fly under the radar. I start a scan every night before bed but I have seen malicious sites allowed through, and am interested in finding the best possible protection.

Great. I have never had Yahoo do what Steve describes but it would not surprise me, Or your hacker only had that one password. Feel free to contact me too. I have been working on this for months. Anything out of the ordinary is suspect. But it sounds like you are safe. I hope so.

I have no intention of calling them--someone else was looking for it. In my Yahoo acct, I am unfortunately buried in spam, sprinkled with important stuff so I have to scan it all before I delete. After what you wrote combined with the hackers dedication to getting into my Yahoo acct when there are so many social sites with lots of people to hurt, once I escape gmail, I am out of Yahoo too. What I saw is proof enough that what you wrote is true. Thank you for the warning.

And you too. I am working with another website now because the person who was supposed to fix my computer blocked me out with a password and we have not been able to get past it yet. She has so much faith in HER choice of security that she has no concern (probably doesn't beleive me)--I saw 2 bad sites pass right through a security scan (what goes through when I am not watching?--that was chance). and the computer is getting sicker and sicker, long story short, and ironic timing. I am going to go the distance with that site, but if you have any other ideas... I can afford to lose everything on my computer so we are trying to strip it and reinstall the os, but everything I do gets blocked by her password which she will not tell me. She also changed the spelling of my name to 3 different spellings. I no longer have an account on my own computer. For now, I am just grumbling, but with open ears if you have any ideas. And if I am unresponsive, Explorer is perfecting the words "...cannot display this page."

I will try to keep you posted. If this works, it will be the first time in 3 years that I had a computer that I could actually use.

It was the only screw up I had not yet made. At this point, as best I know, no one has remote access--the website I am working with now is trying to help me fix the damage. They are trained volunteers who talk you through the repair, ask you what/how you want, give repair instructions, I return with the results, and get more instructions based on those results. But without administrator privileges, I cannot download, and that is what we are working on now--getting my computer back into my hands, then we hope to strip it down and start from scratch (my choice--we are going to try to return it to factory default--it is about time I had a computer I could just use--this one drives me nuts.

In this town I have been robbed 19 times this year, but most of my belongings were stolen by a cancer non-profit and her 5 volunteers. When I called the sheriff he called her to make arrangements for her to return for the rest in 2 weeks! She actually called to make an appointment with me to take the rest. I live at one third of the poverty level. She has it all, all the way to the fancy Cadillac. I cannot get medical care here.

I thought that if I called all the churches, maybe I could get help after my computer was hacked and I could no longer log in (no one could, it was kaput). This couple volunteered. He rebuilt it. They say they had a shop, and do know a lot about computers, but not much about people. He got it so I could get back in, but
it had all kinds of problems. His wife works nearby and came by on occasion to work on it, but would also leave for a week at a time. First, she changed the spelling of my name to 3 different spellings, changed the name of the computer, added 2 new users, and I no longer have an account on my computer. She is the administrator, so I have a word processor. I don't see an acct for her either, but if I try to download it is her password I get prompted for.

I don't take kindly to that, so skipping more, I need to go back to that website, since nothing I did yesterday worked, and hopefully something will. We need to remove her password. I think the rest is all stuff I have done before. But I will not only keep you posted, but will keep in mind that you may be able to help too.

The site is Geeks to Go. They are all trained volunteers and gladly take donations but work for free if you don't have it. They also have a school where the price of admission is to help others after you graduate. Are you familiar with it?

My os is Windows 7, 64-bit if it matters. I do have a question you might be able to answer, though I am having a devilish time with this: If I can enable remote control (I haven't tried), will my computer be able to update itself (and install drivers)? Drivers, specifically were going to be her next job, but my other motive is to learn how to do these things myself. This is a case of please teach me to fish. If the fish flop around, then you can do it. ;-)

This may be irrelevant: How do I close a port in the firewall (having no idea of anything more than the words), and if I can enable remote access, will my cocmputer get all the updates and drivers it is not getting now. I should look, but I usually got them several times a week. I had only 2 optional ones in 2 weeks with the computer as it is now, and wonder if that is why. I also wonder if that increases my computer's risk.
I need a rest and willl check back later. Thank you. I am eager to hear from you.

    Sigh ..
Yahoo .. the site of SPAMMERS ..
(something I truly do not like .. and seems Yahoo doesn't do much to control the spammers/scammers either) ..

Me too. When I learned a little, I opened an acct for friends and family only,, hoping to keep the spam down. That second acct has 25,000 spams. What I am finding is that if I sign up for something, I get subscribed to multiple contacts, most of which I never heard of. Also , my computers are usually not working, and I am usually hopeful that I can get them fixed, months go by, spam attacks. I was on top of it in the beginning. So I also have to unsubscribe from all the sites to which I never subscribed. And now, they ALSO want to know why! I don't have this kind of time.

That's why I don't subscribe to many of those things ..
there's the 'fine print' that passes along everything to so many you can't count ..
it is a pain in the rear to actually disenroll from all of these spam sites ..
    just a total mess ..
(and even this Retiree .. doesn't have the time to deal with all that spam!)

I am learning. It gets worse, I think, because those to whom your name is passed can pass it along again. I have to take small chunks out of each day just deleting and unsubsribing. Thank you for the encouragement to stick with it and to avoid such sites when I smell them. I actually decided that I would use the computer primarily as resource. I have a few email friends. That is enough. Inntellligence is so refreshing. Thanks for posting.

My email was hacked this week too. Sent some a message about making money from their pc. All the o's were zeros in the text and there was nothing in the subject line. I called my internet provider and they said I should change my password and do so every couple of months. Also mix up capital and small letters and numbers in the password. I don't think they got into anything else.
