Kroger, the country's largest grocer, is adding a clothing section at a Marketplace store in Mansfield, Ohio. According to USA Today, "It's the first time in Kroger's 129-year history that it has offered a dedicated apparel section.

"In order to stay competitive, we have to listen to our customers and change to keep up with demand," said Jackie Siekmann, a spokeswoman for Kroger's Columbus, Ohio-area stores."We understand that we are experts in grocery, and we're not going to lose sight of our core values." Does purchasing clothes from a grocery store interest you?

USATODAY.COM reports:
It's trying to compete with Walmart and Target, which have added groceries.

Not out of any dislike of the product its just that I'm only used to buying food from the grocery store and if I want to go cloths shopping I'll go to Zellers or the Bay or some other department store.

Why not? I buy some groceries at a hardware store.
Besides, Kroger has had limited clothing for years. Mostly baby cloths and underwear.

Some German and French supermarket chains have sold clothes for years now. And toys, and decorations, and so on.

Our Fred Meyer carries Kroger store brands and it's had a clothing section for 10 years or more. I wouldn't consider the first time when it already carries clothing under another name.

Why not, if Walmart and Target can sell groceries, Kroger can sell apparel.

Kroger owns a chain called Fred Meyer in the Northwest (Portland, Seattle, etc). They sell very good quality stuff like Nike, Adidas, Columbia, Levi's, etc. Higher end than Target and Wal-Mart for sure and even better than Sears or JC Penney.

Kroger bought out a NW grocery/clothing/one stop shopping market called Fred Meyer. Before Kroger took over, you could even buy lumber and hardware items, as well as grocery, clothing, toys and electronics. Clothing is still there, but the overall selection of one-stop stuff is far less than when it was locally owned. It still says Fred Meyer on the store, but Kroger owns the chain and successfully sells clothing there.

Almost all the grocery stores in Ontario now have a clothing department. Also kitchenware and camping equipment, some furniture, seasonal stuff like hallowe'en stuff. They're all going multi-product, they want you to buy everything you need right there.

Our local grocery store carries Joe Fresh clothing - they're actually good clothes, and I don't see what difference it makes where you buy them.
