Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an apology to iPhone users for trying to compete with Google Maps and failing. Apple banned Google Maps on its iPhones and tried releasing an internally developed competitor. The Apple version of maps had many challenges and inaccuracies that prompted much mocking of the company once revered as impeccable. Some of Apple's fanboys (supporters) blame the failure on the absence of Steve Jobs.

We are extremely sorry for the frustration (the map) has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better... We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

BTW, Google worked on their map app for 6 years before releasing it to the public. In the computer age that is an eternity
