Given the choice, should moms stay home with their kids?

Given the economic choice and financial stability, should moms choose to stay home with their kids? What type of parenting results in the best upbringing for kids? Studies show that latchkey kids (kids who come home to an empty house) don't perform as well as kids who have at least one parent at home. Common sense suggests what studies have proven -- kids need a father or mother in the home.

The Democrats raised this issue recently when Ms. Hillary Rosen, a Democratic strategist, started a war against moms by attacking stay-at-home, mother-of-five Ann Romney. Ms. Rosen criticized the Republican presidential candidate's wife by saying, "[Mitt Romney]'s wife has actually never worked a day in her life." Ann Romney raised five sons and has 16 grandkids.

The Democrats have accused the Republicans of waging war against women, when the Democrats refuse to respect the choice of mom's who don't want to abandon their kids. The Democrats exposed their war on women suggesting that women should work and not have kids, and to have a professional career even if women choose to have kids. Ann Romney and the Romney campaign quickly fired back with tweets and a bumper sticker "Mom's drive the economy."

    Like, perhaps, their father.

This entire question is actually fairly offensive to fathers. If a mother is abandoning her children by working as well as being a mother, then the only accurate assessment of fathers is that they should and historically have abandoned their children by working also.

If they have a choice, yes. If they don't, then they should make sure to find a good daycare provider for the kids.

I think mothers should stay home with their kids until their kids are in school. I understand some mothers have to go back to work before then. I don't think a mother working part-time and putting her kid in a childcare centre a few days a week is her failing to raise her own child though >.> If both parents have to work, it's better if one can work from home at least.

I'll not condemn those mothers who don't stay at home with their kids. But I think the children having a mother at home for them have a better chance at growing up "well," if you will. But then it's also up to what kind of parents are we talking about. This subject is not something you can just lay out a few words and it's covered. There are sooo many scenarios it's pathetic and not a one- or two-sentence answer can cover it all.

But basically, in a nutshell, it depends on the caliber of parents and their skills. As an overall, blanket statement, it is probably more beneficial to have Mom stay at home at least during the pre-puberty days of her children. But a good parent is a good parent, a lousy parent is still a lousy parent, regardless of work circumstances. My mom stayed at home and I cannot recall a single day up through my high school graduation that she wasn't there when I got home from school. And I loved that security!

Where's the "other" category? Both my hubby and I work and my kiddos are latch keys and they turned out just fine...2 down 2 to go. All honor students, never been in trouble with the law, no problems with drugs & alcohol, Eagle Scouts, etc...but we give our kids boundaries and responsibilities and they know exactly what is expected of them. I have seen alot of kids who grew up in households where the mom stayed at home and they seem to be immature to me and I've seen alot of latch key kids who have had run of the house and neighborhood and they were nothing but trouble. All in all, you have to find the best parenting style for your family and circumstance and give it %110.

In most cases a caring parent, Mom or Dad, is preferable to often crowded mob centered daycare centers staffed by minimum wage babysitters. Good daycare centers cost as much or more than a woman can earn. Unfortunately we now base our economy on dual income households. That is part of the reason prices have risen so precipitously in the last thirty years. Nobody would have bought a car for more than $30K. Heck, my parents four bedroom home in north Dallas only coast $28K in 1965. While women should be allowed to work if they desire, I think that many parents "lose" their children emotionally via early daycare and then try to buy back love with material things.

This question is offensive and poorly asked.

Should at least ONE parent stay home to look after the kids? YES. Mother or father, it doesn't matter which. If a woman wants to be a stay at home mother, she is perfectly entitled to do so. If a man wants to be a stay at home father, he is equally within his rights. Each man, woman, and family should do what works for them.

This isn't a "women in general" question. It shouldn't be. There's no answer for that. Some women want to stay home, some don't. To assume it's all or nothing is just going to get hackles raised, and rightfully so.

It's the mothers choice to stay at home or seek employment or continue to work at a business. To imply that she'd not be raising them if she did the latter isn't exactly correct.

It totally depends on the mom. Just because a mother works and is away from home, who leaves her children in the care of a responsible caregiver, does NOT mean she's letting someone else raise her kids. Your answer choices suck!!! This is NOT a black or white question. There are all kinds of variables.

Now if Obama had his way, there would be a COMRADE Mother to do that...Oh there is! It's in the school System Dang........... I forgot!

Really........... Now Days it's hard specially with all the taxes Obama is hitting everyone with, Both Parents have to work unless you are... well some may say lucky I say Lazy and sit at home collecting Welfare and popping out kids so you and get more money for each kid and an increase in Food Stamps.

Kids actually are better adjusted if one parent can be home. But since most can't now days... Quality time when you get home does help.

I would have opted for "mothers should do what works best for them and their children". A happy mother who works out of the house and uses excellent daycare will be a better mother than one who stays home begrudgingly with her children.

Personally, I think it’d be nice.
Little kids love both their parents, but moms just have this way about them that makes you feel better, and it’s nice to have them around. Women tend to be more sympathetic and nurturing by nature, maternal instincts and all that you know.
I’m sure some fathers would rather do the job, and are equally capable, not saying they aren’t. But kids just love their mommies! And why not? She carried you around for 9 months, and the whole while you were bonding with her. Most kids I know talk about their moms, and do things with their moms far more than with their fathers. It just seems to be one of those hard-wired things in our systems.
I know I’m probably dreaming big, but I would love to be a stay at home mom someday, at least until my children are ready to go to daycare for a few days a week. My mom did things that way, and I remember being so happy when she would spend all day with my brother and I.
