Girl Makes Prom Dress Out of 18,000 Starburst Wrappers: Cool Idea or Just Crazy?

It seems like prom dresses get more and more out of control every year: They're too sexy, they're too expensive ... it's always something. So Diane McNease decided to a revert to a more innocent time: she created her prom dress from 18,000 Starburst wrappers.

starburst prom dress

Diane, a high school junior from northern Michigan, used the wrappers to make the bodice for her colorful dress, telling WLUC-TV it took her a year and a half to collect all the wrappers and five months to create the dress. Her school friends helped her eat her way through the project.

But she did have a little help: McNease's pal created the black satin "ball gown" skirt for the dress, she tells Yahoo! Shine. Her dad also helped. "Every night he would help hand sew the folded strips of wrappers to the dress for a few hours." Their hard work paid off when McNease wore the gown to prom last Saturday night ... do you like the crafty dress? Or do you think McNease should have gone for something more glamorous?

It's pretty cool, but I prefer this one also made out of starburst wrappers.

According to my math that dress cost $1,335, 75600 grams of carbs and 360,000 calories. Granted its over the course of a year and a half and she had help from friends. But I'm sure taking that dress off at the end of the night wasn't as much fun for her date as it could have been had she been eating... say, apples instead of pure sugar.

I'm sure it was just as thrilling grandpa. But it's not really our place to judge is it?

Grandpa? I'm not judging. I'm simply expressing my sympathy for the poor bastard that didn't get the rock hard 18 year old on prom night. Don't get me wrong. I love the occasional fatty. Just never hoped to experience one before I could legally buy alcohol.

Wow, that's pathetic and chauvinistic. You must make your mama proud... not.

What's pathetic or chauvinistic about being attracted to girls who don't deplete their natural youthful metabolism by their senior prom? You can barely get a pinch of fat off the average high school girl that takes the stairs once a week. And I never saw the walrus at the top of the pyramid. I'm simply pointing out that blowing through almost 200 lbs of candy to prepare for a 3 hour dance may have unwanted side affects... like saddlebags.

But don't worry. This is just a varying perspective on what, logically, was more expensive, more time consuming and absurdly unhealthy than a traditional gown for the simple indulgence of a few half-assed compliments. Take it or leave it.

Of course, if you haven't detected the faintest hint of sarcasm in my argument then I can't really help you.

P.S. I am my mother's pride and joy. (kisses)

Actually, I could use someone like her in my business. That much attention to detail, the patience required are exactly the primary ingredients for private investigations.

I hope she obtains her license and makes her way to San Antonio. I'll put her to work immediately.

This gown is formal enough for a Prom, and Diane made her point. Her date looks quite handsome, also. I hope they had a lot of fun, that's what Proms are for.

Seems like the mother could have used something else besides candy wrappers and it would have been less expensive. Hello "15 minutes of fame".

I'm all for creative. But, she's wearing trash. She's wearing 18,000 wrappers...PLASTIC wrappers...as a "Prom" dress. It's less crazy than it is tacky as hell. Side note...where did she get "18,000" wrappers? 8-10 candies in each package...maybe 12. The dress says "I'm creative...and eat a lot of candy...and take recycling to a whole new level.
