Girl almost dies after Brazilian wax. Do you think bikini waxing is dangerous?

An unidentified 20-year-old Australian woman with Type 1 diabetes (the kind that requires regular insulin shots) underwent a disastrous Brazilian bikini wax. During the waxing procedure, which was performed by a trainee, the woman experienced some vulval bleeding, suggesting tearing of the skin. And in the two weeks after, she developed symptoms of a worsening infection — pain, swelling, redness and discharge. By the time she sought medical help, she was reporting excruciating pain, fever, a rash that extended up to the chest and neck and severe difficulty urinating. Examination showed her external genitalia were "grossly swollen." Doctors couldn't do an internal examination because the woman was in too much pain; one was eventually performed after she'd been put under general anesthesia.
Several doctors reported "If she had not received appropriate therapy, she would have died".
Doctors continue to say "The importance of it is that it highlights a potential new phenomenon and that is the impact of the beauty industry on patients such as this...One of the problems with shaving pubic hair, as opposed to shaving your face or shaving your legs, is that it's an area that just has more bacteria in the neighbourhood, waxing also causes microscopic tears in the skin that can allow bacteria that normally sit harmlessly on the surface of the skin to slip into tiny cuts and cause infections."

As some others have posted, "trained' staff has to be number one on the list. The "waxee" should have sought medical attention sooner, particularly given her diabetic status. A little common sense goes a long way in some of this sort of thing.

Like anything else.........if it's not done right and by someone who knows what they are doing it can be dangerous. For someone with diabetes a lot of things that are not normally dangerous can be for them.

You're ripping the hair out of your body. Of course it's a little dangerous. The risk of pain is probably pretty high.

I also know that they can use Nair for Sensitive Skin. There is bacteria, but if they clean the area well it wouldn't be as much of an issue! Nair will break you out short term, but it isn't ripping out the hair the way this is! I underwent a surgery where I had to get rid of all hair in my rear end and used regular strength Nair. I broke out with a rash on occasion if I left it on too long, but it allowed the doctors to see exactly what they were needing to get rid of! It is painful to sit down for a day or so, but well worth it!

This must have been a very harry woman who didn't wash regularly. If she was having problems, she should have reported them sooner- and the list continues! This is an extreme case with a person who has Type 1 diabetes.

Unlicenced operators can be. There needs to be more regulations on this kind of thing.

There are blatant problems with her waxing..but it cannot all be attributed to the waxing...

With that said..i am not in favor of waxing everything there..being..um neat is def a plus..but to the point of you looking totally unnatural is just gross.

I think the beauty industry needs higher standards when it comes to bacteria...

But would she have died if all of those things had not been in place?

    Interesting question!

Eeerr, its what you get when your forget to use soap and water. Do what you will with your "Cash and Prizes" but what ever you do, for the love of all that's good, be freakin responsible for your actions. YOU wanted it, YOU knew the risks, YOU ignored what was told to YOU and now YOU have an infection. And to think, this was all preventable.....

I must say Bikini waxing doesn't feel good, but I must also say there are some definite advantages to being smooth...and if you are...you know what i mean. It's not easy being a girl!

A "regular" bikini wax (i.e. not going in too deep, as this person obviously did) is not problematic.

Sounds like it could be a serious infection threat. Which doesn't surprise me as waxing feels like they have taken a layer os skin with the hair.

Not so. Who wants to be with a woman that looks like a mannequin? Why has our culture adopted this latent aversion to public hair? It's perfectly normal. Is being normal now yucky? The Paris Hilton-ization of this country must stop!

Okay, but who wants hair that can have bacteria and nasty smell permananty attached to it? Never been with a woman (and not on my top 5,000,000 list of things to do) but I know how bad hair can smell when it is in certain areas that have body waste coming out of it! I'd rather have something I KNOW is clean :) I thought you were an open minded liberal :)
