Girl almost dies after Brazilian wax. Do you think bikini waxing is dangerous?

An unidentified 20-year-old Australian woman with Type 1 diabetes (the kind that requires regular insulin shots) underwent a disastrous Brazilian bikini wax. During the waxing procedure, which was performed by a trainee, the woman experienced some vulval bleeding, suggesting tearing of the skin. And in the two weeks after, she developed symptoms of a worsening infection — pain, swelling, redness and discharge. By the time she sought medical help, she was reporting excruciating pain, fever, a rash that extended up to the chest and neck and severe difficulty urinating. Examination showed her external genitalia were "grossly swollen." Doctors couldn't do an internal examination because the woman was in too much pain; one was eventually performed after she'd been put under general anesthesia.
Several doctors reported "If she had not received appropriate therapy, she would have died".
Doctors continue to say "The importance of it is that it highlights a potential new phenomenon and that is the impact of the beauty industry on patients such as this...One of the problems with shaving pubic hair, as opposed to shaving your face or shaving your legs, is that it's an area that just has more bacteria in the neighbourhood, waxing also causes microscopic tears in the skin that can allow bacteria that normally sit harmlessly on the surface of the skin to slip into tiny cuts and cause infections."

I'm glad the girl is ok, but is it wrong that I am laughing my ass off about this? (And some of the answers are just great y'all and I'm with you!)

Jeez, next thing you'll hear is that breathing can kill you.

Because you never know where that wax has been. And how do you know the wax stick is even clean every time they use it!? Remember: Recycle, reduce, reuse!

I think it would be painful, but not necessarily dangerous.

Hair is normal and natural. Maintain it. Waxing is dangerous and it makes you look 7 years old. The hair is there for protection. If your man can't find his way through a little bit of a garden then get a man with a better map, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

A little garden is putting it mildly. To make me happy it has to look like an explosion in a steel wool factory.

Why the hell would you pay a complete stranger to put hot wax on your coochie? Personal hygiene is just that, personal. And why the hell would you ever let any infection get so bad before seeking medical help? I know a lot of you men like this practice, but would you pay someone to wax your testies?

I think bikini waxing is just as dangerous as anything else. You cant condemn it for one mishap. I personally just use my beard trimmer to keep the fellas looking their best and to keep the jungle down to a soft grass. I was talked into using a razor once - I was in pain for a week after........never again i say..

If the razor causes to much pain, ever tried to flare them off with a lighter ? Hurts only once, then never again ! ;)

Whether it's physically dangerous or not, I don't know. One freakish instance doesn't make something dangerous; I heard of someone drowning in a soft-boiled egg, once. What I don't like about full-on waxing is that it makes grown women look like little girls. There's something sick about that. But I'm sure they said it when women started shaving under their arms, too. Oh, well...

It looks better than a rainforest type of hygeine. Not a big fan of the chicks that look like they are smuggling chewbaca under their swinsuits.
