Girl almost dies after Brazilian wax. Do you think bikini waxing is dangerous?

An unidentified 20-year-old Australian woman with Type 1 diabetes (the kind that requires regular insulin shots) underwent a disastrous Brazilian bikini wax. During the waxing procedure, which was performed by a trainee, the woman experienced some vulval bleeding, suggesting tearing of the skin. And in the two weeks after, she developed symptoms of a worsening infection — pain, swelling, redness and discharge. By the time she sought medical help, she was reporting excruciating pain, fever, a rash that extended up to the chest and neck and severe difficulty urinating. Examination showed her external genitalia were "grossly swollen." Doctors couldn't do an internal examination because the woman was in too much pain; one was eventually performed after she'd been put under general anesthesia.
Several doctors reported "If she had not received appropriate therapy, she would have died".
Doctors continue to say "The importance of it is that it highlights a potential new phenomenon and that is the impact of the beauty industry on patients such as this...One of the problems with shaving pubic hair, as opposed to shaving your face or shaving your legs, is that it's an area that just has more bacteria in the neighbourhood, waxing also causes microscopic tears in the skin that can allow bacteria that normally sit harmlessly on the surface of the skin to slip into tiny cuts and cause infections."

My gosh. She probably went to a really bad place to get that wax job. I am brazilian and never heard of such a (bad) medical condition involving waxing or "depilação" as we call here. There are plenty of nice clinics (and not salons) in which women can get a decent and clean job done, wherever part they plan to remove its hair. Oh, and BTW, most of my girlfriends waxed "in there"...since I like to eat good candy... : )))))

Take a shower and take your insulin. Who the hell waits 2 weeks to go to the doctor when you have all those symptoms, AND you know you are diabetic? Somethings not right with this story.

Because she failed to go to a doctor - w/ type 1 diabetes - FOR TWO WEEKS. ANYTHING 'down there' is swollen more than a day or two you BET I'm seeing a doctor.

All I can say is think about you skin and what it represents....think about the hair on your body and think of what it's job is....

Now, remove that hair in the most violent way possible...

What you have is a defense system with gaping holes in security.

    Is waxing safe?

I think the more appropriate question is "Is ignorance and vanity safe?"

Human females are meant to have hair, but not including the hair on our heads we're so much prettier without it.. Hair is meant to insulate you in the cold so you don't freeze, so let's all keep a coat and snowpants and call it even =)

hair heads prettier hair meant insulate cold freeze coat snowpants

You just need to make sure that the person doing it knows what they're doing.

BALD IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!! Being dangerous is relative. How many problems out of how many? 1 or 2 out of 10 then yes, but 1 or 2 out of 50,000 not so much. 1 or 2 people out of 50,000 people crossing the street may have some kind of accident.

I don't think its dangerous but it shouldn't be done frequently. I know hair grows at different rates but to conserve money and time , one could shave in between waxes.. Just a Thought BUTT i dont think it should be outlawed.. tha's just a waste of tax money.

Everything is dangerous. People inject themselves with bacteria for godsake, and have sacks of goo implanted that have a potential to burst or leak.

Not responding to the adverse affects, that's just idiotic.

Wanting to look like a pre-pubescent girl? That's just twisted.

Of course bikini waxing is dangerous. Although I have never before heard of it causing health problems, I know it has caused many pregnancies!

The woman had prior physical problems. Unless there's a rash of women dying directly related to the bikini waxing I doubt if women are going to stop.

Me and my friend get it all the time and never have had any problems with it. Shaving is the worst thing in my opinion. I'm alergic to metall and so razors just eat up my skin. So I would have to say that i prefer waxing.

Go to a reputable salon, and if something goes wrong, go to the doctor *immediately* not two weeks later. Many activities carry some risk, and we need to accept that and our responsibility for ourselves.
