Men might one day be able to slather a gel on their backs and their shoulders that protects against getting their female partners pregnant. In a recent six-month trial involving 68 men, 89% of those who were treated with a gel containing the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone progestin experienced sperm counts so low that pregnancy would be highly unlikely, researchers said. The men reported no effects on their sex drive, but the gel is far from being ready for use in the general population. It would have to work for at least 98%of men before it would be a viable male birth control option. Also, researchers could increase the gel's effectiveness by adding another component to it that suppresses sperm production, and it could help to figure out how to select which men will experience effective sperm suppression when using the substance. In any case, the findings will need to be replicated in larger groups of patients, and long-term data on the gel's safety and effectiveness are needed.

PASS IT ON! A gel containing the hormones testosterone and progestin could one day be an option for reversible birth control for men!

I hate that we are the ones who have to remember the pill, or deal with the side effects that all birth control have. It takes two to tango, boys.

I think the key word here is "responsible." It's hard to fathom why, in this day and age, there are still so many out-of-wedlock babies, unwanted pregnancies and abortions, given the fact that there are so many methods of birth control available for "responsible adults" to use. Thanks for your response, rereblue!

I know. And I don't see why so many young kids are rushing into it especially not using it, but that's because they are neither responsible or adults -_-.

    No problem.

But women may wish to be more diligent in birth control then men, as it is harder for them to escape the consequences.

Plus, it's not going to protect against STDs. At least a condom protects against both pregnancy and STDs.

EXACTLY! There are some gals out there today who actually think that if they use a birth control device, such as Nuvaring, or take The Pill, then they're covered. Having a baby may be the LEAST of their worries, because even if they don't get pregnant, they COULD possibly get a death sentence by contracting AIDS from a sex partner!

Condoms don't always work, oral birth control doesn't always work. If you don't want to get pregnant or get a girl pregnant and you are in a committed relationship than I think this is great. I don't like condoms, I use them to be safe but I don't like them. This would be awesome.

It's true that using condoms is a necessary evil in preventing STD's from spreading among men and women. Even the best birth control pill or device does NOTHING to prevent AIDS. You are totally correct. Thanks for your comments, Brandi!

IMO, this new birth control gel for men is a great idea. It's unfair for women to have to be responsible for preventing unwanted pregnancies. Why should the ladies always have to go to the expense, time and trouble to take The Pill, not to mention that the drug causes unpleasant side effects in some women. Of course, the major problem with screwing with abandon, for both men AND women, and only using oral contraceptives is the danger of contracting STD's or even AIDS. A woman who has multiple sex partners should insist on using condoms to prevent babies AND disease.

It is not so sad here in N. America. But in third world country it is particularly devastating for a mother with children to be left with no means of support for herself and her children.

The subject of male birth control reminds me of the recent story about the man who had fathered 30 kids with 11 different women. It's irresponsible and wrong for a man to go around spreading his seed with abandon and with impunity.

Yes it is. I am not saying all men do that , but some definitely do. I dated a man for a very short time until he told me he had 31 kids and never supported even one of the. That is why I knew he was a complete loser.

It's a good thing you kicked that fertile creep to the curb as soon as he told you that he had 31 kids he could not or did not support. Those people who procreate irresponsibly, both men AND women, are a huge burden on the American taxpayers, because most of them receive government benefits to pay for raising their children. Now, the guy who had 30 kids with 11 different baby-mamas makes me wonder about the common sense and intelligence of those women. I mean, who would be stupid enough to have unprotected sex with a dude who doesn't have a pot to piss in? Not only THAT, most or all of them allowed him to continue playing "hide the toy" with them, without using any method of contraception. No, you did the right thing by getting rid of the loser you were dating who had oodles of kids and didn't pay child support for any of them. Thanks for sharing your story! [I love your avatar! Very colorful!]
