Renting a car this summer? A budget travel website suggests you can save money by not buying the pre-paid gas when getting a rental car.

BudgetTravel.com reports:
The next time you rent a vehicle, you will probably be encouraged to "pre-pay" your gas. Described as a great benefit, it’s a huge moneymaker for car rental companies because you will probably buy gas you never use.
Rental car companies are pushing the pre-paid gas option harder than ever.

It's tempting in such situations to think, "Wow, $2.90 a gallon is actually pretty cheap compared to $3.20 at the Shell station, so I should buy this full tank of gas ahead of time."

Pre-paid gas is about a dollar more then if you buy it at a gas station. You only get pre-paid gas if it’s company business.

I've rented quite a few vehicles. There are two huge ripoffs in the rental industry:

    1. Pre paid gas.
    2. Insurance.

Pre-paid gas is literally a tax on being lazy. Is it that hard to stop at a pump on your way back to fill it up? At my last job in the states, we used to rent 24' and 26' International Box Trucks/Stake Beds all the time. Those things cost over $100 to fill back up and took a good 10 minutes, but we still did it.

Insurance is a tax on ignorance. If you are renting a car, then it means you carry a major credit card. Your credit card already provides insurance and protection.

It's not like you're going to use the whole tank. It's better to not pay extra for the gas you don't even use. My cousin learned that the hard way when she came from Mexico, at first she laughed at our $3.33 prices then she did the math and realized she probably wouldn't be using even half the tank she paid for.

Unless you know you're going to bring it back empty - it costs you money to prepay.

Very true. You can better believe they are not doing you a favor at no extra cost.
Buy only what you use and you will be ahead!

Just allow an extra five minutes to top off the tank on the way to return it, and save $$$.
