Forbes: Young Adults Without Facebook Accounts Are 'Suspicious': Agree?

Emily Yoffe of Slate.com said, "I’m fine with people not having a Facebook page if they don’t want one. However, I think you’re right. If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn’t have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag."

FORBES.COM reports:
I used to say that if you’re not on Facebook, it’s possible you don’t actually exist. I think it's time to update that: Facebook abstainers will be labeled suspicious.

    Third option! WTF?!?!

Since when did it become 'suspicious' not to join in with the rest of the herd? I had a FB account for TWELVE HOURS before I ran screaming into the sunset. Their back-end software is SOME kind of scary shi'ite! Think the civilian equivalent of Carnivore.

That's right sports fans, Facebook's backbone is essentially the same software used by the government to track terrorists and drug kingpins!

And my failure to capitulate to that madness is 'suspicious'?! Three words: SCREW YOU FORBES!

For what it's worth, HR wonks tend to be creepy little mackrelfarkers anyway. They and their plans for / opinion of "the rest of us" probably bear at least 30% of the blame for the messed up state of the labour market.

So if you do not have a FB you are hiding something and all people who have FB are open friendly, honest.
Are you really saying that if someone has not got FB they are dishonest people who are hiding things away from the powere that rule us!

of course its not an "all or nothing" thing. there r dishonest ppl on fb, just like there's honest ppl that don't. i'm saying u don't want to b a part of the social networking world because ur paranoid the wrong people are gonna find out something. right? so that raises the question, what r u hiding?

Ok but the choice is up to that person, i have nothing against it i have one but the issue is that if you do not have one you are hiding something is just nuts.
Perhaps people do not want to join, simple has that its nothing to do with some sort of murky past!.
I done Boxing,Tae Kwon Do,Akido and other mixed arts, does that make people who did not do it mammies boys,my point being just because one does something that does not make the person who did not do or join that group odd. No person should me made to join or do anything through force or this mind game ploy by Forbes.

ok, i'll give u that one. i see whatchu mean. but i personally do feel a little weirded out whenever i meet someone that doesn't have fb, twitter, instagram, etc. i feel like, "wow, r u aware its not 1987 anymore??" or i feel like, "ur obviously trying 2 not be publicly seen." i feel like in this technological age, we're moving towards the day where everything is done via fb and when that day comes, its gonna b reeeeeeeeeeally shady if someone isn't in on it. i guess all i can say is, the people outside the giant fishbowl r looking in like "what the hell r they doing? everyone is watching them" and the people inside are like, "what the hell r they doing? y won't they come in??" and i guess i'm the one inside looking out... lol

That would be a dangerous path to go down, not to give a job to someone because he/she/heshe did not have a FB account.
Its someone ability to do the job that counts, not if he has a FB.
Perhaps im not getting this why should someone be a suspicious person because he or she has no FB
Dont give her the job, the FBI has told us that she has no FB, where does this stop, its the ability of the person to do the job, is it or am i missing something.
  • Joey Ian 2012/08/09 08:44:06

You are not missing anything in my view . However it would seem that people would be scared that you are anti-social if you don't have one. It is that soft psychology that people pick up and run with for no reason.

Good point, but the person should be viewed upon their ability.Would a introvert who has good qualities be over looked for the person who is a extrovert who has less qualities. It may be that the person who is a introvert may not want a FB account, just a thought.

So if we all had a FB account none of us would be under suspicion.
Jesus h Christ this is great, is this some kind of joke did some pencil neck from Forbes really come up with that, he should be sacked on the spot 20 seconds to pack and leave the building and security can shoot the walking methane plant of a human being dead.
And if security guard have FB they will get away with it, they are above suspicion.

    The HELL?!?

So today I learned that If you don't have a facebook page you're probably using a false identity.

I'm currently on the lookout for another job - retail, nothing fancy. I sure hope they don't think along the same lines as Forbes and choose not to hire me because I don't use a friggin' social networking site.

I have heard people saying that recently, that when you apply for a job, alot of employers automatically go look up your Facebook page. But I don't understand why? And there are SO many on FB, they would have to do some serious searching and weeding through results if they looked for like, Sarah Smith or something! Lol, time consuming! And what about people like me? Mine is completely private unless your on my friends list, so they wouldn't be able to see anything except for maybe a picture of me and my husband and kids at the top. Does that mean I wouldn't get the job? Lol rediculous. I'm not sure what they are looking for, or why they think that Facebook would provide it...?
  • Noobcake Katie A... 2012/08/09 06:39:58

I suppose they do it to get a sense of the character of the person they're looking to employ - just because they can. And I imagine you would only be deemed SEMI-suspicious with your private profile. lol It IS ridiculous.

I'm on this college forum website, and I couldn't believe it when I read that some girl was weirded out that her room mate didn't have facebook and how was she ever going to learn what she was into or how could she contact her? Ridiculous.
Facebook is nice to connect with people... stalk people..... etc.... but you don't need it to survive. I'm not surprised if people aren't on it. I have two good friends that aren't on it...well, one was but she quit after a year or so.

My guess is Forbes is tired of getting burnt on Facebook's tanking shares. Besides, I imagine some young people have actual real lives more important than FB, rather than unproductive virtual lives of utter pointlessness.

Voting for Ron Paul is suspicious. Researching internet privacy is suspicious. Ordering a vegetarian meal on a trans-atlantic flight is suspicious. Having the wrong name is suspicious. Engaging in political protest is supicious. Joining environmental/animal rights groups is suspicious. Exercising your second amendment rights is suspicious. This post is suspicious.
