Forbes: Young Adults Without Facebook Accounts Are 'Suspicious': Agree?

Emily Yoffe of Slate.com said, "I’m fine with people not having a Facebook page if they don’t want one. However, I think you’re right. If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn’t have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag."

FORBES.COM reports:
I used to say that if you’re not on Facebook, it’s possible you don’t actually exist. I think it's time to update that: Facebook abstainers will be labeled suspicious.
forbes reports facebook exist update facebook abstainers labeled suspicious

    Third option! WTF?!?!

Since when did it become 'suspicious' not to join in with the rest of the herd? I had a FB account for TWELVE HOURS before I ran screaming into the sunset. Their back-end software is SOME kind of scary shi'ite! Think the civilian equivalent of Carnivore.

That's right sports fans, Facebook's backbone is essentially the same software used by the government to track terrorists and drug kingpins!

And my failure to capitulate to that madness is 'suspicious'?! Three words: SCREW YOU FORBES!

Wanting to have a shred of privacy left in my life... I suppose that makes me real shady. If the planners of this great nation had any IDEA about how personal information could be abused over two and a quarter century later, I bet we'd have a privacy amendment in the constitution, right up there with freedom of expression and religion, and the right to bear arms!

If the world has taught me anything, we have no idea what future generations will dream up... But we DO know someone out there will try to take advantage of others with it.

Maybe in some cases but there are also people on Facebook using fake names etc so I don't really get this whole thing.

FORBES; while 20 million or more websites can tell you the ROTHSCHILDS FAMILY are trillionaires, est. between 300-900 trillion, and run the planet, they never seem to make forbes list of anything really..forbes makes like they, never even heard of them...now thats, SUSPICIOUS !

Why do you think that? Maybe they just enjoy their privacy, maybe they have better things to do with their lives.
  • LYNN MEYER 2012/08/09 18:29:27
Why do you have curtains and/or shades on your windows...
    A lock on your door...
    A safe in your bedroom...

Obviously, you must be up to something!

No... Facebook airs your personal life as a timeline for all to see. It shares your personal information to companies, who will then try to market to you by tailoring their marketing to your interests (and taking advantage if those interests to coax people into spending on things they don't need to). People have been ROBBED because facebook gave out enough information to allow public viewers to know where they lived, and what their schedule was.

Not having a Facebook account is a choice...

    I choose Privacy...
    I choose Security...
    I choose Safety...

Rather than 'suspicious' they may be cautious. Employers track employers through Facebook and have fired ones who post things or agree with things they don't like. Men and women track each other. It's possible that someone doesn't WISH to be tracked and just says no to Facebook.

why should people be forced to use facebook if they don't want to. Honestly it's probably better that they don't get involved with it.

What? So suddenly I'm a suspect because I choose not to participate in a stupid fad that will be gone within a couple years? Was I suspicious because I didn't have a MySpace account. And this part: "...if you're not on Facebook, it's possible you don't actually exist." Hey,a*shole, guess what: I'm sitting here typing this right now, aren't I? I get out and go to school, play sports, do what other kids my age do, therefore, I exist. How 'bout that, Forbes?

I have a Facebook page which I rarely use. I check it very occasionally, just to see what is going on. I am not a diarist (look THAT up in your Funk & Wagnall's). There is not much going on in my life that I want broadcast to the whole world.

Some young adults have more important things to do than get on face book everyday tell what they had to eat or where or why. Many young adults are out learning or trying to find a job, or trying to make ends meet. I think Forbes must be very rich or very liberal to even come up with something like this.

Absolutely !! Forbes is right ! We must examine every one for loyalty to the Gov. and make sure children are having sex, and using their condoms they can have for free from school. Hang out & hook up . In the mean time, just what is forbes trying to say here? If you don`t have a facebook acc. , How does would someone know? Are you under suspicion if you don`t take part in such public conversations as in "well I`m walking the dog to-day", or " I think I`ll wash my hair and clean my fingernails now" If so what are you being suspected of ? We are watching you ! Hey, Big Bro. ! Some are watching you too. And some just plain don`t care.

No.. quite the opposite actually.... they would be stable, and not requiring constant peer approval of everything they do. They would be intelligent enough to know that posting your private life online is NOT a good thing to do.

I would be more suspicious of someone who spills their guts out hourly on Facebook - - can we say Attention Whore?

Some people like to keep their lives private. There is nothing wrong with that. And besides how do you know the person you are friends with on facebook are real. I think I remember reading some where that there were over a million facebook pages that were fake.

No. I've set up an account in the name of girlfriend's favourite cuddly toy - clearly facebook can't be taken as proof of identity unless Emily Yoffe of Slate.com would like to admit a yellow stuffed duck is a real person and go to bed with him (it'd probably make the duck's day!)

I don't have a Facebook because everything i do on it is their for ever. I don't want my information sold to 3rd parties. I don't want people to know me for i can be a target for assassination (#NDAA) I want my privacy. I don't want people to know EVERYTHING about ME. MY LIFE is NOT an open book. My life is my business and no one els's. Facebook is suspicious because it KEEPS EVERYTHING you posted, liked, un-liked, friend, de-friend, messages ext. Why is it that Facebook and Google wants to know EVERYTHING about us? It's simple why they want to know.
Facebook = NO PRIVACY both on Facebook and off.
