Something is HORRIBLY WRONG in America when a nightclub in Alabama has a "Food Stamp Friday" promotion where people are supposed to bring their food stamp cards in exchange for alcohol and discounts at the club.

Pretty sick! My manicurist (next to a Community College) told me that her business was slow until the welfare checks come out.

I'm sure the owner is a conservative doing his best to make "The Food Stamp President" look bad.

If our last ...er...President, hadn't sold away all their jobs to pay for HIS war(s), if he hadn't let Wall Street deregulate, or ignore regulations, causing them to lose their homes, if our health care system didn't get so "randy" about making money and forcing people into bankruptcy...there wouldn't BE so many on food stamps!

This whole thing is wrong on many levels .

In the interest of honesty. The Food Stamp card cannot be used for drinks on food in the club. The Food stamp card provides discount on the cover charge to get into the club.

We understand that Ray. It is just the idea that if you are on food stamps - why are you at a club paying a cover charge and ordering drinks.

That is what is meant that it is wrong on many levels.
Anyone on food stamps should not be going to clubs in the first place.
Then for the Clubs to Glorify the recipients of charity with a " food stamp night " is wrong .

Many of the replies below suggest that believed they were using the food stamp card to buy drinks and food .

My, ...er..."severely" conservative brother-in-law (who is a millionaire), has his 30+ year old kids on "stamps". I'm sure he's not alone. It's probably folks like them showing up. By the way, did anyone show up (with food stamps)? Or is this just another way to make one of today's necessities look bad?

I don't know who showed up. It is my understanding that all they have to do is to present their card to get a discount of sorts. If they are that hard up for money - then what they do have should be going for necessities, not cover charges and drinks.

So probably anyone friendly with an unfortunate friend on food stamps could borrow them and get cheep drinks. Maybe a brother or sister, an uncle, an old friend, whatever. There is no proof, apparently that anyone actually on foodstamps showed up. It's just a negative conservative publicity stunt to shed a bad light on the food stamp recipients they themselves created. Nice people!

Many people "sell" their cards for cash or other favors.

Yes, well there ARE other human needs not covered by food stamps. When you have a hungry or sick family there may be needs far more important than alcohol, and they may even be more important than their full allotment of food.

In 2008 they estimated Food Stamp fraud was costing 330 million a year nation wide. We have nearly double the number of people on food stamps now, so figure that has risen as well. If people cannot be responsible with their "Gift" at taxpayer expense, they don't deserve it. To that Bar doing Food Stamp Friday's, they should loose their license.

So how do you seperate the fraud from the good? Increase the number of investigators and grow the government a bit?? Or let the good die along with the bad.
We need answers, not criticism, and niether party has any. If conservatives would stop blocking Obama's "highway bill", and other jobs bills, we could get people OFF food stamps! That's the solution, NOT giving more money to the rich who need more padding under their asses! Who need less regulation so they can rip off more Americans and put them ON food stamps!
I agree with you on the "license thingy"!

No, you set strict standards that will limit the ability to perpetrate fraud. Like not allowing cash advances from the FS EBT card, only allowing fresh and unprepared foods (no pizza, burger, fries or subways ready to eat). (Edit) No soda pop either.

A story on Food Stamp Friday can be found here: http://hotair.com/archives/20...

The abuses in the EBT cards are occurring nationally, and I'm not sure what exactly the government expected was going to occur. Between the frauds and illegals, they're draining the sysem.

I just read about one scam called Water Dumping. In states where they charge a deposit for bottles and cans, recipients buy a case of water, dump out the water and cash in the bottles. Because water and soda can cost about the same, they are doing it with soda as well.

I really don't have a problem with a program to aid those down on their luck or incapable providing for themselves and family, BUT there has to be strict rules for them to follow. Having 46 to 48 million people on FS is unacceptable.

I'm yes and no on this one. I grew up dirt poor, and my parents held 2-3 jobs until they landed a good paying job, because they did not want to go on government assistance. It was considered the lowest of the low. You don't however have that work ethic anymore with the vast majority. There really isn't much dignity anymore, and it's become a way of life. It's really sad.

I agree completely. My Dad worked two jobs to provide for us, so I know what you're saying. I also know that the work ethic of too many has slipped. There are too many who have been poorly educated by our Government education system too though. I so wish we could get education out of government and union hands. Too many great minds going to waste because of the education system.

No, but the government had campaigns to get more people on FS's, so they get what they got. In 2008 there was about 330 million in fraud. That was a bout 20 million recipients less then now.
