Food Inflation Kept Hidden in Smaller Packages?

~ The Rebel ~ 2012/06/18 04:48:28

Chips are disappearing from bags, candy from boxes and
vegetables from cans.

As an expected increase in the cost of raw materials looms for
late summer, consumers are beginning to encounter shrinking food
packages
.

With unemployment still high, companies in recent months have
tried to camouflage price increases by selling their products in tiny and tinier
packages. So far, the changes are most visible at the grocery store, where
shoppers are paying the same amount, but getting less.

I've seen the smaller amount/same price trick quite a bit. Food prices have risen way too much in the last decade. I try to get a lot more meat and produce than processed stuff, and the per pound prices are awful. It's hard for a lot of families to consistently have decent nutritious food.

I remember a few years ago I could buy a 35lb bag of dog food for $50 now the same dog food is in a 30lb bag and costs $54. I remember when I was a kid that the candy bars were big and 25 cents now they are half the size and cost about a dollar. Cereal and chips are a real joke because they give you mostly air and half of what you used to get. Watch out on quality because it has gone down also. I had fed my dog a particular brand of dog food for years then he started scratching and I changed his food but he kept scratching and after trial and error I found out that he is allergic to anything with chicken in it. I also have several friends that had the same with their animals. Chicken product in animal food has very low quality and is unhealthy. There are foods that I used to like but they changed something in it to make it cheaper and it does not taste as good. A lot of our foods have poor quality and more chemicals in it. Our food quality is one of the reasons that there are so many fat people. Eventually people are not even going to able to afford the poor quality then we will go from a fat nation to looking like a nation of anorexics.

I noticed this three years ago when I purchased a container of ice cream and it wasn't a half gallon any more.

A couple of weeks after I sent a letter to the manufacturer, they sent me a coupon for a free container of ice cream.

(Some clerical person missed the point of the letter.)
