Fire on Costa Concordia's Sister Ship: Are You Less Likely to Take a Cruise Due to the Recent Costa Incidents?

The Costa Concordia tragedy, which resulted in the death of about 32 passengers and a handful of people still missing, happened just last month in January. The disaster left a bad taste in many people's mouths. Many blamed the captain of the Costa Concordia ship, others thought the cruise line was at fault and some just thought the whole thing was a horrible tragedy that should never have happened in the first place.

Well now, Costa Cruises has another disaster to recover from: a fire on its Costa Allegra cruise ship. Though the Italian cruise line quickly released a statement assuring people that no one was hurt on the ship and that the fire -- which started in the engine room -- was quickly put out, the ship had to stay adrift in the Indian Ocean for hours. Sure, the dilemma was inevitably solved, but it occurred nonetheless. And it happened to the same cruise line that experienced such a horrible tragedy just a month prior. Do you think Costa Cruises, which is owned by Carnival Cruises, can ever recover from such back-to-back emergency situations?

With the average cost of two people for seven day being nearly $8,000 dollars, I have never been able to justify that kind of money for a trip. For $1500 bucks you can travel with in the US and have alot of fun. Butte Montana glacier park yellowstone

A US Airways plane crashed in the Hudson River a few years ago, then an Air France crashed in the Atlantic the same year. Are you never going to ride a plane again now? Of course you are. I've been on several cruises, and my parents go every year. We've never experienced a single problem. Accidents happen, but don't let them dictate your life.

It was a stupid mess-up... planes crash all the time and yet... we still get in them.

More people get killed in car accidents than cruise ships. Just don't go to Mexico.

There are inherent risks in everything we do in life and going on a cruise ship is still way down on the list.....
  • IZZY 2012/03/02 16:44:40
I won't be taking a cruise on the Costa Cruise lines, that is for sure!

Funny thing is I was never "more likely" to take a cruise on a ship or any other vehicle for that matter... I would not be caught dead (or alive) on one of those, packed in like sardines, breathing in all of those nasties from the other people... ewwwww, no way!

The bizarre odds keep getting smaller and smaller with regard to incidents on a cruise ship.

  • caron.lade 2012/03/01 16:37:57
safer than flying! actually, I have always had a wonderful time cruiseing and learning about different people. I can't afford them often, but do enjoy them!
  • acid 2012/03/01 16:26:27
and i can't afford to go in the first place

you couldn't pay ME to go on a cruise.... ever! They used to be special and rich events now they are nothing but low pay workers, crooks, and slop ships... no way, would I put myself out in the middle on a ocean on one... no way!
  • Moonage 2012/03/01 14:32:35
I am definitely not going to take a Costa ride.

i've been on cruises and there's always problems. these costa incident aren't the only reason i won't go again...its the samonella and food poisoning, diseases that worry me the most. they hire so many people from so many different countries and don't make sure they have all their shots or test for tb, hep c etc. better chance of getting sick rather than running a ground
  • Flickdraw 2012/03/01 13:43:56
I'm less likely to go on one now. But I was never likely to go on one in the first place and I'm only using these events as ammunition to fuel my "Wouldn't really want to go on a cruise holiday" attitude that I had before they even happened.
  • MissNovemberTuesday 2012/03/01 09:18:38
No less likely, but since I am broke right now, it wasn't going to happen any time soon, anyway. Once things pick up, if I can afford a cruise, I would love to take another one. Maybe they could offer good deals as incentive.
  • MHA 2012/03/01 08:47:02
No and No. You asked TWO questions. (If people read the whole article, they would have seen the second one.) NO, I will not reconsider taking cruises, I like them and this tragedy is not an every day event, just like plane crashes are not every day.
And no, Costa Cruises will never recover from this back to back emergency situations. They apparently do not adhere to the safety regulations for all cruise ships world wide, and the captain did something stupid. The fire on the Allegra may or may not have been due to neglect, but because it happened, it added to the potential demise of the Costa Cruise line.

I wasn't likely to go on a cruise anyway, so this doesn't change anything.

There is no way in hell that you could get me on Cruise ship. Man with my luck the black plague would break out. I hate to fly but I rather take my chances in the air. I don't care how nice those Cruise ships are remember the Titanic it couldn't sink what happened it sank.Nope not me, sucker!
  • Jessica 2012/03/01 04:27:00
Oh please. Stuff happens but I ain't gonna let that stop me from doing something I want to do. Besides, I'll never be able to afford that crap. For that kind of money I could probably stay in London for a few days or so.

although probably not on that cruise line. will use a different one. stuff happens and the captain on the other one was an idiot.
  • Charlie 2012/03/01 00:23:10
I am most likely to NEVER go on a Costa Concordia Cruise considering that the first boat's captain jumped ship the first chance he got and this happened not too long after.

1st cruise was on Norwegian out of Miami. Ate at fan tail welcome party at 1500 and was deathly sick at 2200, both of us. Ship's Doctor said food poisoning and we were not allowed to leave our cabin for FOUR days (as explained in case it was something else) The Doctor admitted that a great number of people on board had food poisoning and in the same breath said we must have all eaten at the same place prior boarding. Norwegian offered ZERO compensation. Now I cruise in my Old Town Canoe - no issues keeping afloat and have never been sick!
