FHM Magazine (Philippines Edition) Pulls March Cover After Complaints: Is It Racist?

Get ready to be offended. The Philippines edition of British lad mag FHM has pulled its March cover and issued an apology following complaints of racism, The Telegraph reports. The questionable cover shows Filipina actress Bela Padilla in a pink bikini surrounded by black models in black bikinis with the cover line: "Bela Padilla stepping out of the shadows." Yikes.

fhm ad

FHM admitted there were "a slew of comments on the supposed 'racism' of the cover image and cover line" after the original cover was uploaded to the magazine's Facebook page on Saturday, leading them to come up with a new cover.

"When FHM hits the stands in March it will have a different cover. We deem this to be the most prudent move in the light of the confusion over the previous cover execution," said a statement from Summit Media, the magazine's publishers, according to The Telgraph. "We apologize and thank those who have raised their points. We apologize to Bela Padilla for any distress this may have caused her. In our pursuit to come up with edgier covers, we will strive to be more sensitive next time."

Padilla, a 20-year-old soap opera star, also apologized for her participation. "The concept was stepping out of MY inhibitions, MY fears, MY shadows. Not bashing a certain race," she tweeted. Do you find the cover racist? Or at least insensitive?

It's offensive, because the dark skinned models are clearly staring at the light skinned woman in a worshipful (or jealous) manner (they are objects, servants- but she is the queen and the center of attention). Also, the phrase ' stepping out of the shadows' is ridiculous. Whoever designed this should be fired. Do designers not think about the message they want to send when creating such depictions?

It's culturally/ethnically insensitive, but as for definitely racist- I am uncertain. I will say that this cover is not flattering to the women to the left and right of the model nor the designers who created the image. I do not want dark skinned or black women to be objectified- when an act/depiction removes the humanity of a person based on his/her race, then yes it is racist whether you like it or not. Can you not see this- even if you are not of minority descent? How would you like to be portrayed in this manner?

Race baiting? Everyone kept repeating the same thing. Saying everyone voted for Obama because he was black is like saying the people who didn't vote for him did not like him because he was black. Misinformation. People vote for stupid reasons all the time. I have a friend whose Mom votes for the most attractive candidate. Get over yourself. Parties divide this nation and people like you contribute to the problem.

Yes. And I'll tell you why: you used race as a pun. Which is pretty funny and clever IF everybody is in on the joke. Otherwise the joke has no place in the public forum. It's okay to offend people for their silly little beliefs - you can help that, all you need is to get educated or informed. Race can't be helped and for too many people it's a ticking point and an entry to other things. FHM doesn't deserve the revenue it could receive from people whom it casually offends.

They were going for visual effect and ended up with something which could be interpreted as racism.
Maybe FHM should just stick to doing what it knows: woman in heavy makeup with big tits, and not try to be 'clever'

Personally if I had seen this cover with no prior knowledge of a controversy racism would never have come to mind. I see contrast. I've seen music videos by both black and white artists where dancers are the contrasting race of the singer. I also don't consider the black models to have looks of "adoration" on their faces. The one in the rear has more of a "wtf" expression. The other two appear to be just looking with the one on the left looking past Bela and more at the model on the right.

People don't come out of other people. Shadows are dark. How could white models logically be behind Padilla? Apparently Americans aren't the only insecure people seeing prejudice where none was intended.

What this ultimately boils down to for industry: avoid controversy, skip hiring black models for shoots with lighter-skinned models. I guess they'll have to get some white girls in and paint them up in blackface. Problem solved!

Magazines that are published FOR and focuses entirely on a specific race, ARE racist - Ebony and Essence are two I know of. How can anyone can argue they aren't? This FMH cover is far from racist - did anyone contact these models and ask them what they feel about it? I see it from a photographer and artists eye - the focus is on the lady in pink, the issue is about bikini's. Background dark, subtle back lighting. Dark skin ladies are fantastic subjects when trying to achieve certain moods and specific light reflections. As you can see, the lily white lady hardly reflects any light - BORING. It would offend me if the black ladies were dressed like slaves or wore turtlenecks and sweats, but they look better in a bikini than Bela does!! Does this say "I am superior to you because of my
race?" NO. I'm offended it offends people.

racism is when one race is put forth as being superior to an another---Ebony and Essence are in no way trying to do that; but i totally agree with the rest of your comment:))

I ALMOST agree with you. I find this cover a little offensive (not to the point of indignation but mere annoyance) for a couple reasons:

    1. While America still and will have issues with race, the Philippines struggles more so. In the Philippines discrimination is on the basis of skin tone rather than race. If you are a Filipino with pale skin you are deemed attractive, successful, etc. Having dark skin in the Philippines is a fast ticket to the bottom rungs. Historically, this traces back to the Spanish occupation. The wealthiest, most powerful Spaniards who came to the islands were pale skinned Castillians. During their time in control of the archipelago they vigorously spread their gens among the brown skinned natives. The lighter offspring of these pairings received higher social status and even became eligible (worthy) of marriage. Soon, an even paler generation of native Filipinos emerged. These were born to privilege and lived in the big hacienda bearing the name of legitimacy, their father's name.

    2. Virtually every product in the country contains skin-whitening ingredients. Women walk around on sunny days huddled under an umbrella afraid to tan. They go to the beach in long pants and shirts for the same reason. This also explains the fact that natives of tropical islands...

This "caste" system is not the case in America. If you work hard or if you are inherently wealthy, money and success has little to do with your race.

So in context this cover is racist.

Sorry, I just did not get the jist of the question. Why exactly would it be racist? Then I read the comment about the black models staring at the white model and, it did not seem to be the case. If the background had been lighter, all the models would have stood out. Just my opinion, and to me, the background is what needed to be changed. The taller model is in the middle, just like in class pictures.

Really? I wouldn't be so upset if the black women didn't look so damn submissive. The message would still be clear if they looked confident or even malicious. The picture is not even a good one and not appropriate as a cover page. As a "stepping out of the shadows theme", it would work better on a spread not cluttered with text, so the black women could be seen more as 'shadows'. Perhaps they might have poses more predatory, crouching or looming. Bela Padilla sould look more like she's stepping 'out' of them, standing up straight, not relaxing on them as if she's pimping them out. Not a good image, and that's a BS theme if that's what they really said.

Exactly what it was meant to be controversial. Year after year FHM tries to steal the spotlight from Sports Illustrated swim suit edition by putting whatever is the media grabber of the moment.Lin-sanity is rampant put an Asian on the cover Add to it with the NBA heavily African American dominated and put Black women in the background..Hey it got a headline here..lol.Difference being Kate Uptons career will garner here success for years to come..this cover a one and done at best(perhaps some porn). But really men are far too shallow to care

Not to me, anyway. I look at it, and I just see people. After noticing their color of skin and then looking at the tag line I could draw a conclusion of a possibility of racism. But as I don't care about skin color and I don't know what the tag line was about, it isn't racist.

I want to change my answer to No. I don't think it's racist, but the way the photographer decided to present this was just....He/She just wasn't thinking. I appreciated the fact that He/She was trying to be creative, but he/she could have shown his/her creativity in a way that people wouldn't take it as racism. and the choice of words "stepping out of the shadows", that's like calling every black person a shadow and not a human being, that's the thing that got me, that's what offended, me the choice of words.

Nobody called the women anything. Man, what's up with the assumptions? You said, "it's like saying......." NO, it's not "like" anything said. Words, and what they mean, are not meant to be twisted into different words and meanings. People who do that, DON'T LISTEN, don't understand, and/or don't care to do either one properly. I can't stand having people put words in my mouth, or tell me I said anything I did not say. Do you like people doing that to you?
