Fewer Young People Smoking Cigarettes: Have You Ever Smoked?

Good health news today: Fewer American teenagers and young adults are smoking cigarettes, a new government report shows, according to WebMD. The percentage of 12- to 17-year-olds who said they lit up during the survey month declined from a high of almost 12 percent in 2004 to a low of 8.3 percent in 2010, according to the report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

And young adults are kicking the butts, too. The number of 18- to 25-year-olds who reported smoking during the survey month fell from nearly 40 percent in 2004 to about 34 percent in 2010. "Although some progress has been made in curbing youth smoking, the fact remains that 1 in 12 adolescents currently smoke and 1 in 3 young adults smoke -- which means far too many young adults are still endangering their lives," SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde says in a news release.

"Smoking is the nation's leading cause of preventable death and we must take every opportunity to prevent kids and young adults of today from becoming the hooked, ailing adult smokers of tomorrow," Hyde says. Have you ever smoked cigarettes? Lightly or heavily? If so, did you kick the habit? Or are you one of those people who was smart enough to never start to begin with?

tobacco is a prime source of taxes. only about 50cents a pack goes to the tobacco industry, the rest goes to taxes. Fewer people smoking will raise our taxes.

And while it is not a good reason to die, it is also not right to take people's freedom of choice away if they choose to smoke.

Haven't had a severe asthma attack since my early teens but I'd still rather not tempt fate besides I already have a risk of cancer thanks to it being in my fam. I refuse to tempt fate in anyway possible.

And I still do. Smoking makes me happy, so therefore, I am going to smoke. If people don't like it, they can go somewhere that I'm not. All these smoking bans are ridiculous! It should be up to the individual business owners to decide if they will allow it or not.....NOT the government. Plus I'd rather be a smoker than obese! Have you noticed the number of young people smoking has decreased while the number of young people who are obese has increased?????? Coincidence?? I think not!!!!

For about 15 years 30 years ago. I became a SmokeStopper trainer for a while. I'll probably take it up again if my wife precedes me into the ether. I enjoyed it, but it's a heinous addiction.

Considering the fact that I've been hacking my lungs out for a month (allergies, I think), I don't plan on smoking and making it worse.

Plus all the health problems, and the fact that I'll smell like smoke :/

Never have and never will and i never date any girls and any women who smokes no matter how hot or how attractive she is i would never date her if she want to date me then like i said she either quits doing drugs and smoking or I'm gone and if she starts I'll dump her no exceptions.

Nobody not even girls and women can make me start smoking i don't care how how hot or how attractive she is never make me start smoking and that's a deal breaker if she smoke, doing drugs and drinking to me.

I'm OK with if me and her only drink for special occasions nothing more because i never smoke,i never do drugs and i never drink(except drink for special occasions) if you think part of standards is too high i understand and yes smoking kills and smoking, doing drugs and drinking is a waste of money in my opinions.

Yes fewer! Probably because it is now a little but harder for kids to get cigarettes, compared to back before they realized the damaged they cause! Back then they were more openly availible to anyone!^_^

I have smoked but I would never smoke regularly. Seems to me that you would have to be pretty stupid to use tobacco habitually now that we understand the health negatives.

...didn't have to. I got all the nicotine I would ever need, growing up in the 70s with two chainsmoking parents. I've never had a lit cigarette between my luscious lips.

I had enough of that growing up in my mother's poisoned houseful of 2nd hand smoke. Always hated it. Then when I got old enough to learn what degenerate scum the growers and producers of tobacco products were, it gave me all the more reason to shun it. Now it's an intelligence test: Anyone who starts smoking now is just a stupid idiot.

I don't even smoke pot any more. Besides, pot is not something one smokes continually, one after another, all day, every day. Even the most committed pothead never gets near the consumption rate of a tobacco addict. I'll be glad when tobacco simply disappears from the market forever.
