FEVER DREAMS: Are Adventure Journalists Sane?

Jeff Antebi, a friend of mine from childhood, lives the good life. He has a wife, kids, health and wealth. He runs a successful music company called Waxploitation and represents amazing talent. He has invitations to Hollywood parties and box seats at Lakers games. So one may wonder why Antebi does adventure journalism in the most dangerous parts of the world during his spare time.

Antebi has traveled to cover the elections in Afghanistan, narco-wars in Juarez, Mexico, illegal squatter communities in Brazil, bloody ethnic/religious insurgency at the Thai/Malay border, crisis in Haiti and more.

"When I arrived in Juarez," says Antebi, "within an hour, over the police scanners, a body has been found. And maybe 30 minutes later, another body. And then another body. And by the end of the day, it was 10. The next day, 10. The next day, 10."

Check out his amazing photo-journalism and diaries in his newest book, "Fever Dreams." Yes, a shameless plug for my friend! But I also see the value in his dedication to exposing the horrors of human condition in hopes of improving the lives of those who need it the most.

Why would Antebi put himself in harms way to document the deadliest corners of the world? He has a passion for adventure and covering the truth about the human condition. Or maybe he needs a shrink. What do you think?

Everyone has a right for doing whatever they like as long as they don't hurt other people with it. Although I couldn't do their job I also think what they do is necessary. Otherwise how people would know what's going on in those countries. There are so many suffering all over the world what we don't know about. And we wouldn't know if these people won't go there and report it. I'm sure it is a really heartbreaking job to do. Don't envy either them or their families. I also respect him doing this job as he could just live in total ignorance as most of the world. Especially he has the money to that. Thanks God there are more and more wealthy people to stand up and give something back to humanity.

of course they are sane!!! you cannot call someone insane only because he doesn't wanna work crappy daily job......i mean we all have different ideas and wishes about life, and if the person wants to do something like this in life, maybe he's a bit (too) risky, but isn't it his choice? These people are brave, curious and want to hear and spread the truth about what they saw. what is "insane" in that?!?

Everybody has something that really trips their trigger. If you can do it, then just do it. Adrenalin junkies have to get their fix. As long as his familiy is good with it, why the heck not?

Antibi is addicted to Adrenalin. Plain and simple. The reptilian brain which consists of the thalamus, mid brain, pons, and medulla, are part of the brain stem and spinal cord known as the reptilian complex, or lower brain. The basic ruling emotions of love, hate, fear, lust, and contentment emanate from this first stage of the brain, and your brain does not know the difference between these emotions. Our emotions are nothing but neurochemicals receptors in the brain reacting to differing input from the central nervous system. That is a fact. Ask an alcoholic or addict. He or she is well suited to convince you. BTDT, first hand experience.

If no one covered it the world would never know how screwed up everything really is.
It's not like the mainstream will tell you everything going on. Only if it can be used to further a political agenda.

They're performing a service, and if no one documents the poverty and suffering of less-fortunate cultures, who will? It's BECAUSE they document these situations that they're able to help people in those countries.

Hundreds of years ago, such would have been the explorer .Sailing away on wooden ships seeking the unknown , mystery and adventure .

200 years ago such would have been among the pioneers , engaging in Western expansion . Lewis and Clarke , Mountain men , path finders and explorers .

A little over a hundred years ago , such would be members of the Explorers club . Hunters and adventurers into the unknown .

In the future such will travel to other planets , to explore , to learn , to see and do .
Such are they that will create colonies in space.

For such as they , Journalism into troubled areas is all that is available for those whom would seek to challenge themselves completely . Choices such as extreme sports , mountain climbing and sky diving seem mundane .

Antebi is an escapist at heart--when the going at home seems monotanous, the 'tough get going'... From a wife's point of view, I'd be resigned to his 'need for speed'--translation: Adrenalin Junkie-- much like wives of seal team/special ops. members, swat teams. You know inside sooner or later you're going to get 'that call', but you have the kids to think about, so you put that thought on the back burner and keep going with the safety and welfare of your children as front thought...Noble endevors aside, what if his actions brought harm to his family? Time to stay home and rethink your priorities. You can't save the world, even if you want to. You can, however, get your family killed by taking photos of the wrong people at the wrong time, and releasing those photos/videos into the media. Adrenalin rush junkies come in all nationalities, and all have a great, tremendous rationale for their actions. It's called a cover story. When you continue to do something insanely dangerous not only to yourself, but also your family, and you just can't stop it, guess what Bruddah! You have an Addiction.

Its childish and nothing more. These people get themselves and others hurt and killed all the time. They never tell anyone anything they don't already know, and they approach those situations with little knowledge and even less training. Then when something bad happens, the experts have to go in and help. Insane is not really the word for it. Stupid comes to mind, because it is juvenile at best.

He wants people to wake up and see the damage the drugs are causing..may God Bless him. I still say make pot legal and stop these killings. San Antonio picked up a few Cartel so they are here too.

God is not going to bless anyone. God does not exist. Drugs don't cause the damage, people make that choice. That is what causes the damage. You want to talk about the cartels? Never mind the people growing coca leaves for cocaine do so out of choice, right? Number 1 cash crop, puts food on their table, pays their bills, and since they work it under the cartels, protection is guarenteed. They could grow food, but it does not pay as much. Grow up and get your head outta the clouds.
