    It depends on who's turning on the TV. If it's a guest, then it's rude. If it's a member of the host's family, it's not--or not AS rude. :-)

    If it's his (the baseball fan's) home, it's a lot less awkward than a guest doing this. As a host, I'd want to make everyone feel comfortable, and this is most easily accomplished by abolishing all the fake gentility and making everyone feel comfortable, speak freely and relax as though they were in their own home. Sometimes, a little breach of protocol is just the ticket. :O)

    Personally, if the hostess, I would smile and turn off the TV explaining that he can watch after the meal or leave; and still smiling tell him that he certainly has a choice. If he leaves, fine - he will not be missed.
