What's happened to chivalry? Some place intimate, getting on one knee, focusing only on HER. If your old fashion, maybe go ask her parents if you can ask her to marry you, getting there blessing. There are some traditions worth keeping, this is one of them. If your feeling progressive, let her get on one knee and she can go ask your parents for your hand in marriage.
Most men I think feel that doing that is romantic and a memory they will share for a life time. Unfortunately they do not see that the answer could be no and the pressure and embarrassment makes it even worse. So they are the one's left the most embarrassed.
Sadly this is not the way to find out she does not share your feelings.
