"Be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intelligent and not like senseless people. This may be a wicked age, but your lives should redeem it. And do not be thoughtless, but recognize what is the will of the Lord."

Sounds like some of the edicts of Buddha's 8-fold path. "WWJD?" is an excellent question.

Very sound advice. If St. Paul considers his age to be wicked, what would he say about ours? Lord help us. Virtue is never spoken about today, except in ridicule.

Which bible are you using? It's clearly not the King James version.

It's from yesterday's 2nd reading at Mass (Catholic), and it's an English translation of whatever they use here in Japan. Not sure which Bible version it is.

This is the English Standard Version, although you can see quite a few of them on the website ^_^

Okay then bearing in mind context. I actually think that whoever is speaking is promoting the idea of science. To question, to think and to do good as good seems to be (or rather, by using 'Intelligence'). Although recognise the will of the lord is a little confusing. I don't necessarily take the bible as the will of the lord.

Sorry, but I think inserting science into this is a bit of a stretch. Not that there's anything wrong with science (it's a great thing), but the overall focus of Paul's letter to the Ephesians was on Christian living in an age when the early Church was heavily persecuted. And when there were plenty of non-Christian influences (many of them not good ones) all around them.

" like intelligent and not like senseless" << become intelligent not senseless i.e ask questions.

You're thinking that science is an object or a concept unto itself. Science as we currently know is a modern definition. However Natural Philosophy (it's forefather) was and science remains at it's core, not to disprove god, but to ask questions. That 5 year old brat that keeps screamed: "Whhhhhyyyy!!!!" << is science.
