Emma Watson Hangs With Dog After Pink Dye Job: OK or No Way?

We're pretty sure this color doesn't occur naturally. "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson was spotted walking a friend's dog after it was dyed a bright pink, The Daily Mail reports, and animal lovers are crying foul.

emma watson pink dog

The 1-year-old bichon frise, Darcy, was reportedly dyed pink via a $140 beetroot-based semi-permanent dye treatment at Groom Dog City in London. While Groom Dog City's owner called the treatment harmless, vet Emma Milne isn't convinced.

"Dogs are not playthings; they are not dolls. If you are putting a chemical on a dog’s fur, you could cause that dog problems. Even if the dye is completely safe -- and the dye that Emma Watson has used should be absolutely fine -- you are still altering the way the dog looks and smells to other animals," she told the Mail.

Groom Dog City Owner Stuart Simons disagreed, telling the Mail: "All the dyes I use are completely animal-friendly. They are made from vegetable dye. I wet the dog, rub it on like a shampoo, leave it for five minutes and then wash it off. Because Darcy is white, it takes really well. She is a very calm dog, absolutely lovely, and she enjoys her groom."

Watson explained on Twitter that her friend was raising money for breast cancer awareness -- hence the pink color. Do you have a problem with pink pooches? Or was Watson's friend just supporting a good cause?

It wasn't even her dog, so you can't blame Emma Watson. Dyeing a dog isn't something I'd do, but at least it was safe dye. I just don't see any point in dyeing a dog. And beet juice is harmless. People are making too big of a deal about this.

This is not acceptable behavior by a mature individual. This actress is obviously looking for attention and using her dog to get it. Shame on her.

Uh no. Try reading the article. It was a friend's dog who was trying to raise money for breast cancer. Don't judge her when you have no idea what you're even talking about.

We had a neighbor's white dog keep coming over to our property. One day we lured the dog in, crushed poppy leaves from the flower beds, and dyed the dog purple. Never saw the dog again, owner decided to keep it home.

Well...I would be cautious about the animals skin. Dogs actually are very sensitive to anythng harsh. As far as what the good doctors says, since most mutts appear to be anus friendly, I don't think altering a dogs fur color is going to make them smell much worse! Also...aren't dogs supposed to be color blind?

NOOOO! Animals are not toys! Not even if the dye is safe. If Emma's friend wanted to raise money for breast cancer awareness then let her dye her own hair pink!!

A lot changes in 60 years. Some of it good, and some of it bad. We're always learning more than we thought we knew. Some things we thought were good we later find out are actually bad and vice versa.

Right... and the dyes have gotten a lot safer so in many ways this is more acceptable, unfortunately the stigma of animal abuse cases raises red flags (rightfully so) in the hyper-sensitive persons who misread their moral compass.

If the dye is completely free of chemicals and made from 100% food based ingredients, there shouldn't be a problem. I wish there had been an "undecided" option for this question.

If we can do " Tots In Tiaras", which I find disgusting, why can't we dye a dog as long as it is safe. I am a dog person and personally would not do it, but I would do this before I put my baby girl out for display as a piece of meat for a bunch of sick people to tell her if she is good enough or not or for perverts to get their jollies off on. We need to get our priorities straight.

At least they left the skin on the dog, and dyed it. Besides folks, its hair. Anybody know the one characteristic that all hair has in common? Its dead....Just a thought...

PS...Dogs (and apparently some humans), are color blind....

    Awareness my ass..
Same as everyone who's ever had a nose job did it 'due to a deviated septum'.

Add the pink ribbon if you're doing it for awareness.

"you are still altering the way the dog looks and smells to other animals,"

No, dogs aren't dolls but I have two problems with this statement.
    1) Dogs are colorblind, and unless you're giving the dog designs I don't see why this would play a huge deal.
    2) The smell of the dye is eventually going to wear off.

As long as the dye is safe I don't really see that much of a problem with it. I don't really think the dogs care very much either way, as long as they get lots of lovings from their owners.

Dogs see much in the same way as a color blind person. The colors are somewhat less bright and they see fewer on the color spectrum than we do. They also confuse certain colors the same way as a color blind person would. However they can still very much see color.

Yeah, that's basically what my source says. They see in yellow, blue and gray, that's a very limited color spectrum (considering gray is not a color at all, but a shade). They barely see color.
