A baby elephant at a German zoo who suffered from heart problems has passed away. Lola would’ve been the world’s first elephant to have heart surgery to remove a blood clot, but died during preparations for the operation. At just three months, during a CTA scan, the calf suffered from a pulmonary embolism and could not be revived. Zoo director and veterinarian Dr. Andreas Knieriem commented on Lola’s tragic death to the UK’s Daily Mail: ”Considering the pathology, it has to be said it’s a miracle that she lived as long as she did. Her arteries were so blocked that blood couldn’t flow through her lungs anymore.”

They are showing much more connectedness with each other than we humans do. In the photo above, the mama elephant looks like she is smiling. Their body language is much different as they all caress the baby elephant.
We could all learn better living by watching this family.

Yes, elephants actually CARE about each other. Many years ago, I watched a documentary showing a mother who refused to leave her dead baby to join the rest of the herd, when they knew they had to move on to look for water. She wasn't finished mourning.......

I had heard that elephants gather for their dead herd members. It is as if they have a funeral rite that goes back thousands of years

Sad, I hope the elephants don't blame the keepers for the little ones death. If they can mourn then they have the logical capability to know the little one was alive when they took it and it came back dead.

They are. Elephant herds are now suffering PTSD from what humans have done to them.

I love the babies. They are so funny, and like little (BIG) kids. They are all wiry with all that hair all over them. But they are a hoot.

Elephants are amazing. They seem to actually be aware of death. I've seen a few really informative specials about them touching the bones of their long dead ancestors and behaving reverently towards them. Wish I could see one in person and interact with it just once before I die. Whales and elephants are my favorite animals.

Was it about this particular incident? Or about elephants in general? Either way, I'll try to find out when it'll be on again so I can watch it.
