Eating lots of chocolate helps people stay thin, study finds....Is This Good News To Everyone?
(CBS News) What's the best way to stay thin? A new study finds it's exercising and eating a healthy diet full of - chocolate?
Mindless eating: 8 food goofs that pack on pounds
The study found that people who frequently ate chocolate had a lower body mass index (BMI) than people who didn't.
Is it time to ditch fat-free for fudge?
For the study, published in the March 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine,
researchers examined more than 1,000 healthy men and women who were
free of heart disease, diabetes and cholesterol problems. They were all
enrolled in another study that measured the effects of
cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, but for this study researchers
assigned them questionnaires that gauged how often participants chowed
down on chocolate.
The researchers found that the participants -
who were an average age of 57 - ate chocolate for an average of twice of
week and exercised roughly 3.5 times per week. But the more frequent
chocolate-eaters had smaller BMIs, a ratio of height and weight that's
used to measure obesity.
What explains the effect? Even
though chocolate can be loaded with calories, it's full of antioxidants
and other ingredients that may promote weight loss, the researchers
said.
"I was pretty happy with this news myself," study author
Dr. Beatrice Golomb, associate professor of medicine at the University
of California-San Diego, told USA Today. "Findings show the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining ultimate weight."
Does that mean all diet regimens should include a daily chocolate bar? The researchers say it's too soon to tell.
"Our
findings - that more frequent chocolate intake is linked to lower BMI -
are intriguing," the authors wrote. However, "It is not a siren call to
go out and eat 20 pounds of chocolate a day," Golomb told HealthDay.
This
isn't the first study to suggest a daily dose of chocolate can do the
body good. Last summer, a study of more than 100,000 people found those
who ate the most chocolate were 39 percent less likely to get heart
disease and 29 percent less likely to have a stroke, HealthPop reported. Months later a 10-year study of 33,000 women found a 30 percent reduced risk of stroke among chocaholics.
But
experts warn not all chocolate is created equal, and some could contain
lots of sugar and calories, which could lead to other health issues if
consumed daily.
"I would not want people reading this to think
that all [they] need to do to lose weight is eat more chocolate," Dr.
David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center in New
Haven, Conn., told WebMD.
"That would be a huge mistake." Katz suggests dark chocolate, because
of its bitter flavor, may suppress appetite whereas sweet chocolate may
stimulate it.
The Mayo Clinic has more on chocolate.

The Kuna Indians living on the islands had almost nonexistent rates of heart disease and cancer compared to those that live in the United States.
The natives improved blood flow after consumption of flavanol-rich cacao beans fruit helped to achieve health benefits in hearts and other organs. In particular, the benefits extend to the brain and had important implications for learning and memory.
I read a 15 year study of elderly men published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006 found a 50 percent reduction in cardiovascular mortality and a 47 percent reduction in all-cause mortality for the men regularly consuming the cacao beans fruit.
I use to take asprin two three times a day for pain, one week after i started to eat 10 beans a day I stopped taking asprin, because I had no pain. That was three years ago, never touched asprin again.
Magic Beans
on SH think it is. I don't even eat it everyday and only a small amount. I have never
had kidney stones and in fact I am really quite healthy.
large amounts but that isn't true. And they do say not every chocolate is equal.
How many boxes a day did they say we should eat, lol!!!!!

Dark chocolate actually has more calories than white , so how does that work? More bunk studies. If you want to continue being fat and out of shape just keep eating more chocolate.
"A regular block of chocolate contains almost an entire days calorie allowance and frighteningly, almost 4 times the daily fat allowance".One serving of Hershey's Special Dark Kisses contains 180 calories, but a serving is comprised of nine Kisses. Each Kiss has 20 calories. More than half the calories come from fat.

I posted BS. I am willing to believe it because over 4 years ago I lost a lot of
weight and I ate chocolate the entire time I was losing.
Besides, it is not the calories or what you eat that causes weight gain or the
inability to lose. I ate what I wanted and did no exercise at all. In fact I was in
a wheel chair for 2 months during the time I was losing. I lost over 50 lbs.
then and lost another 8 lbs. since.
Lost 50pds in a wheelchair from chocolate. More B.S. If that was true everyone would be stuffing their face with it. Sounds like something else was going on that caused you to lose weight.
And your wrong again. 3,500 calories = 1 pd of fat. To many calories causes weight gain. Go back to school before you talk to me. You just sound dumb now. .
about. I ate 3 meals a day but had chocolate cake, candy, or whatever I
wanted. I didn't say I lost it from just eating the chocolate but you don't
have to count calories or exercise to lose weight. And if the weight is
lost slowly it will stay off.
Nothing dumb about me since I was able to lose weight, keep it off, and
helped a couple of my friends lose weight. And on top of that I am healthy
and very active now. Before I lost the weight I was on a lot of Prescription
Drugs that I no longer take.
That doesn't mean I agree with your statement and method of weightless. Anyone one else would fail doing what you did. So you are an exception to the rule/.
lose weight will lose weight. They will lose it slowly and it will stay off, unlike
peopple who go on diets to lose weight and then gain it right back.
I asked a Doctor how to lose weight and kind of diet is best. He replied " No
diet, just eat the foods you like and are used to eating, only, EAT LESS!"
Have desert but only one small piece of cake, not half it and never take
2nd helpings of anything. Never eat close to going to bed for the night.
It was hard the first 2 weeks but just had to remind myself that I didn't
need that much food. I lways stop eating now when I am full. Sure saved
a lot on the food bill too.
It wont help you tone or get rid of stretch marks though. And will do zero for your heart health and lungs.
You should advocate exercise not eating chocolate. You could be hurting some one.
eat a box of chocolates or several candy bars every day. To lose weight, you must have self contol and it seems a lot of people on SH don't have any. I keep chips & sweets in the house, a small bag of chips will last a month. I also need the salt, so that is why I have chips.

problems but not that it might help with weight loss. A few years ago
I lost a lot of weight & I ate chocolate during that time as I always do
but never thought that it might have helped.
