I don't need them to do that, I do it my self, I turn OFF my phone each time I go into a restaurant, more for me than anyone else.
If I can't have a lousy 30 or 40 minutes to eat MY lunch or have dinner without worrying about my stupid phone, then I have no life. The phone is for MY convience not for every Tom, Dick, & Harry that thinks they have to have access to me every waking second of the day.

On what grounds would you sue them? They offer this special "discount", and you have the choice to keep your phone on you or willingly hand it over to them.

As it is I don't check my phone when I am out to dinner unless it is for some impotant reason (e.g. family member in hospital or work related situations); for the most part me phone is in my pocket or purse and on silent. I'm not sure if 5% off is motivation enough for me to leave my phone in the hands of a stranger.

Especially if my child wasn't there with me- I'm a single mother and need to be contactable. Plus, I don't really think it's worth it for 5% anyhow!! lol.
Having said that, I'm NOT one of those annoying, antisocial people who constantly has their phone in front of their face and sits there texting or social networking instead of talking to the people I'm with. That's just rude and ignorant.

Why? Why would I have to do that? What, am I a two year old that needs someone to manage every second of my life? Why can't I leave the damn thing with me, on silent, in my pocket? Huh? Don't tell me how to live my life!

I have a small machine/repair shop. The customers cell goes off, then they keep chatting, I had to wait. Lost time and money. Now, if they it happens, the clock is still ticking, or, sorry take it some where else to get done. It is starting to get better in my area, people are just getting feed up with it. Now if I am forewarned, they need the phone, or are waiting for an important call, not a problem, I will turn off the machines, and go to the office or waiting area.

I do not see why anyone would even want to check his/her cell phone while eating as it would be a distraction from eating.

5% just wouldn't be enough. Why would I want to go without my cellphone for that long just to save a few bucks? Make it 15-20% and I might consider it.

It's so irritating when you're having food out with friends and they constantly check their phone, it makes me feel like they don't want to be there. Why ask me out if you're gonna stare at your Mobile??

Any discount is welcomed. However, once we were eating at a restaurant when the airline we were next going to catch our flight on called us and asked where we were, as they were now boarding! We had forgotten the time change of the flight we often took. The restaurant was next to the airport, and we would have missed our plane and have to wait 2 days for the next one

    I'm BLIND ..
I rely on the Smart Phone I use ..
to 'read' to me the menu items that are listed ..
    (or off their website) ..

    To offer this ..
when so many have disabilities ..
and use their devices to actually COMMUNICATE ..

is .. in a way .. discrimination against those with Disabilities ..

Your argument is solid and makes great sense I think it's fantastic you can use it, my nephew who is also blind uses it for so many things and I find that as something wonderful in those cases. For the other folks that have their head buried in them out of addiction and impoliteness well that is another matter, LOL

    THANKS for the reply ..
it is such a handy tool indeed ..
(and really opened up the world to the vision impaired .. by the simple UPC code!)

(oh, yes, indeed .. it is definitely different for those who impolitely chat all over the place, rudely .. in places where you'd like to have a bit of peace/quiet .. )

I will definitely hope so too ..
For the most part .. when I explain that I can NOT 'read' printed words ..
    (because of being blind) ..
folks are usually more than happy to help me by reading what my apps can NOT read ..
(sometimes .. like in local restaurants with no national ties .. there's no codes that my apps can read on their menus or offerings .. )

It seems the 5% of is so people can eat in with out a cell going off. I would more than bet, you could use your phone and get the 5% off. My daughter is deaf, and legally blind, so I do understand a little about it. Every store or restaurant, I would stop at the cashier, and say my daughter is deaf, and she wants to eat or shop, I will intutrpite, yet I would like them learn and do some signs for her. The stores just went out of their way to help. She was a shopper they wanted her back and her friends.

    THANKS for the reply ..
I've found .. for the most part ..
When I politely explain that there's something there ..
that is not 'readable' by my apps ..
that the service personnel .. in the stores or restaurants
are more than happy to READ the information to me so I can make an informed choice ..

I could go with out checking my phone for weeks. People are way too dependent on their phones these days, and it's sickening. You can rarely hold a conversation with people anymore because they have to check and reply to text messages that really aren't that important.... they have to answer calls that aren't that important.... they have to distract others in public places by talking on or checking their phone (ex: movie theatres.... the glare of the bright screen is distracting if they're texting). I do not tolerate this b.s.
Once I even flat out ditched my friend when we had gone out for a walk around campus, because she continuously was checking her phone and texting. I don't need to deal with people who can't take time to live in reality.

Not to mention I doubt the restaurant would take responsibility for any lost or stolen phones. 5% isn't worth taking that chance.

CEO's traveling on business, and teenage party-girls, are the most notorious for carrying their cell phones 24/7, although young girls/women are the number one suspects for text-messaging while driving, or ANY conceivable opportunity.
