Dyeing Baby Chicks: OK or Oh No?

Everybody loves baby chicks on Easter, but do they really need to be dyed in pastel colors to make them even cuter than they already are? Poultry farmers say it's harmless when nontoxic dye is used, but animal rights advocates are against the practice, which is banned in about half the states and some municipalities, The New York Times reports.

In fact, in Florida last month, the Legislature passed a bill to overturn a 45-year-old ban on dyeing animals. "Humane societies are overflowing with these animals after Easter every year," Don Anthony of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida told the Times. "This law has protected thousands of animals from neglect and abuse, and it shouldn’t be lifted on the whim of one dog groomer who wants to dye poodles purple."

As far as baby chicks go, the dye is either injected in the incubating egg or sprayed on the hatchling. The color lasts only a few weeks: it comes off as chicks shed their fluff and the feathers grow in a normal color, the Times reports. Animal rights advocates say the dyeing experience is stressful for the birds, and that baby chicks shouldn't be sold when they're under four weeks old. Do you think it's OK to dye baby chicks?

Makes them attractive to Children and then they are abandoned when the dye wears off.
Plus it is a stupid thing to bring into the house with a cat or dog.

Sodahead screen bounces sometimes! The poor little things get choked or squished or dropped. Or dumped in the country. I live on a farm off the main path and get all kinds of animals abandoned.

I live out in the country (hills) on ten acres. I installed hi-res game cameras with flashcards in them to monitor the roads after a few drop offs.

Now, I juat tap into the camera check the video and if someone left an animal I go get it and call animal control with a description of the car and usually the license plate (depends on weather). If nothing I erase the video from my computer and reset.

Owner is fined $500 for county drops (me) and $1000 for city. Of course, word got out & I made some for my neighbors (just charged for parts). Funny, no one come around here anymore.

It looks cute for a while, but wrong. They did this junk when I was a kid and sold them in the stores around Easter, chicks and bunnies. A lot of the animals died or were taken and dumped at farms where people assumed they would be taken in and raised. Not necessarily true. I thought they had already given up on this practice personally. Given the move from an agrarian lifestyle, why would an apartment dweller buy livestock for a holiday? We lived on a farm, you take them home they're cute for a while, then they turn yellow or white and go on with their lives. In the city they'd end up dumped on Animal Control or running loose in public parks falling prey to larger birds and animals. I am more against the sale of animals to people with no intention of raising them than the dyeing it's harmless, selling these creatures isn't.

Right! Same here. I was given a bunny once but I had not asked for one. Not too long and it 'disappeared' and a couple days later we had something new for supper. Chickens tear up landscaping bigtime! We get cats and dogs, a goat, a couple geese, well, you know.
