Dyeing Baby Chicks: OK or Oh No?

Everybody loves baby chicks on Easter, but do they really need to be dyed in pastel colors to make them even cuter than they already are? Poultry farmers say it's harmless when nontoxic dye is used, but animal rights advocates are against the practice, which is banned in about half the states and some municipalities, The New York Times reports.

baby chicks

In fact, in Florida last month, the Legislature passed a bill to overturn a 45-year-old ban on dyeing animals. "Humane societies are overflowing with these animals after Easter every year," Don Anthony of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida told the Times. "This law has protected thousands of animals from neglect and abuse, and it shouldn’t be lifted on the whim of one dog groomer who wants to dye poodles purple."

As far as baby chicks go, the dye is either injected in the incubating egg or sprayed on the hatchling. The color lasts only a few weeks: it comes off as chicks shed their fluff and the feathers grow in a normal color, the Times reports. Animal rights advocates say the dyeing experience is stressful for the birds, and that baby chicks shouldn't be sold when they're under four weeks old. Do you think it's OK to dye baby chicks?

But it damages your hair, and if it gets in your eyes or mouth you could be blinded.. Plus the animals cant be asked if they're ok with it obviously so anything that isn't a natural function of the animal shouldn't be done. It's making these living things into designer toys.

Wonder how they would feel if someone stuck them in a vat of dye.Blue, green, yellow it does not matter the color. They would be the first to sue and scream about how inhumane it is.

Dyeing chicks doesn't bother me as much as what becomes of them after Easter fun and the dyes begin to fade.

How who you like to be injected or spayed with dye, having no idea what's going on?
  • ray RocPape... 2012/04/03 21:32:33

You are assuming far more complexity of a birds brain than nature allows.

Are you saying that instinctual fear is not present?
  • ray RocPape... 2012/04/04 02:03:22
    ray
Infant dyed ? Where would such a fear have been developed?
There exists no evidence that the birds are even aware of the dye.

It would have been just as cute if they dyed fake chicks. I don't think its right to use animals as props.

Reminds me of this jerk who use to color the shells of turtles and then set them back into the wild. Lets just say these turtles became easy targets for Alligators and Crocks.

  • Tara 2012/04/03 16:27:28
    OK

Personally I don't really see the point. But as long as the methods used aren't actually harmful to the birds (if the most stress you ever undergo in your life is getting sprayed in the face with colored water, you are truly blessed), I don't see the ethical problem. And chickens aren't mammals. They're not dependent upon milk for the first few months of their lives, and therefore can be hand reared from birth. So age isn't an issue here.

The whole thing stinks of animal cruelty, right up there with dying dogs and horses.
