Dupont Releases Self Charging Smoke Alarm. Do you check your smoke detectors?

Available in a 3 pack, Dupont has created a smoke alarm that screws into a light bulb socket and charges every time you flip the switch. The smoke alarms come with a 10 year warranty and yes they may look a little phallic. Do you keep constant check of your smoke detectors at home or have you let them stop working?

But strange as it may sound, our smoke detectors are already self-charging. When my husband checked them, they still worked, after about 12 years. The night our youngest caught her bed on fire, they worked well. The whole house was full of smoke and the two alarms refused to quit screaming until we wet rags and put over them. Then it took a couple minutes to get them to stop.
I'm not sure why Dupont is acting as if this is something big. These have been around a while. Of course, maybe up 'til now, it's only been the contractor installed type that self-charged, I dunno.

we dont think its a big deal. we have had our scares with fire that someone--mostly me--catches and we put it out pretty quick so were good:)

I hard wired my smoke detectors into the electrical system when I built my house. They have a battery backup in the event the power goes off. I replace the batteries periodically.

The Dupont Self Charging Smoke Alarm sounds like a good idea.

Mine are wired directly into the electrical system of my home. They have battery back-up but are on continuously--when the electricity goes out the battery-back-up kicks in. It's worked for 11+ years! But I do check the back-up every 6 months.

where i live ,each month someone comes in and checks our detectors. good thing cause i would forget to do it. a necessary evel.
