Drinking While Pregnant: OK in Moderation or Not Worth the Risk?

According to five new Danish studies, drinking occasionally while pregnant may not be such a big deal after all.

Researchers took a look at more than 1,600 Danish women and their children, and compared kids born to nondrinkers to those who had mothers who could be categorized as light drinkers (1-4 a week), moderate drinkers (5-8 a week), or heavy drinkers (9+ a week). (Keep in mind that an alcoholic drink in Denmark is defined as 0.4 ounces of pure alcohol compared to 0.6 in the U.S.)

The scientists controlled for outside factors, such as smoking and the mother’s intelligence, and found that light or moderate drinking while pregnant did not have any noticeable impact on a child’s overall IQ, attention span, or self-control. However, the children of heavy drinkers did have considerably shorter attention spans compared to their counterparts.

Despite the growing evidence that light to moderate drinking during pregnancy is harmless, many doctors still strongly discourage the practice.

Dr. Jacquelyn Betrand, representative for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and co-author of three of the studies, told HealthPop: "This study doesn't change our recommendation. We have a long history that alcohol causes birth defects. Drinking during pregnancy is just not worth the risk."

What do you think SodaHeads? Is drinking while pregnant OK in moderation or not worth the risk?

Just don't drink anything heavy; vodka, tequila, or other liquor. Red wine is good for your health anyway, just stick to one glass and don't have it EVERY day.

    Moderation is your friend, people.

(Keep in mind, I'm not promoting drinking while pregnant. I'm just saying it's NOT as big of a deal as long as some idiot doesn't frizock it up by binge-drinking to this news.)

That's fine. This is a "to each their own" question and you're no better or worse for making up your own mind and I respect your opinion. I just think it's worth noting that these studies and studies of the past have shown that drinking in moderation is not only safe for the infant but actually healthier for the mother and her child as it can lower blood pressure and ease stress and tension. I find it hard to close my case as that prevents me from learning anything in the future.

I know people take all the new "scientific studies" as gospel these days but did it ever occur to anyone that the people conducting this new 'research' and selling these new books in droves are just in it for the money? Every 20 years the dos and don'ts with pregnancy and newborns flips back to what it was a generation ago. People have been making babies for a while now I think. But every new mom thinks they're the first and they are taken advantage of for profit. A glass of wine or two every night isn't gonna do any more harm than all the fats and sugar pregnant women shove down their throats because they're "eating for 2".

I have three children & not once when I was pregnant for them was I told not to eat tuna fish or lunch meat, which is something they are telling these pregnant women now, and my kids are all alive & healthy. You are exactly right in the sense that every other day we are told this is going to do this & that, yet we got by just fine before.

Tuna is full of heavy metals and now irradiated from nuclear reactors. The lunch meat is new to me but I can see it being bad with all the preservatives, binding agents and most likely MSG/GMO.

The tuna, made the list because of the mercury levels. The lunch meat had something to do with chance of bacteria in the meat...

It's the same thing as laying the baby on its stomach or on its back. The recommendation has changed like 6 times since my 4 year old was born. It's a 50/50 scenario and with 100's of scientists working on it you would think they had conclusive evidience that one way is better than the other. But that would put a hamper on baby book sales.

    Amen to that.

Red wine is supposed to promote heart health anyway - ALSO in moderation.

Wine or even beer is okay if you ask me, but heavy things like you mentioned, yeah that's out of the question unless ya keep it a virgin drink.

You are correct, ma'am. Many thanks for the rave by the way!

And yes, red wine, also in moderation, is good for one's health. It's recommended for anemia in fact, as well as other benefits.

Again: MODERATION. Take responsibility or don't even take a glass.

I personally don't care what 'studies' have been done to prove that it 'may not be such a big deal' I wouldn't EVER take the risk. In my opinion it's just as bad as doing drugs or smoking cigarettes.

I look at it like, Would you give your newborn baby alcohol? Would you give your newborn a cigarette? Would you give your newborn some narcotics/coke/weed/ect?

People seem too forget that ANYTHING you put into your body while pregnant goes too your baby as well as you.

It's only nine months. If you can't stay away from drugs and not get high for nine months, you have a drug problem. Even if those drugs happen to be legal.

FAS damage is not all drooling and nubbed extremities. The defects of a slightly fas child are so prevalent nobody notices it anymore. Defiance and concentration issues along with anger fits and lack of empathy are the most overlooked and excused symptoms.

If you can't give up drinking for JUST 9 months for the sake of your baby then I don't think you'll be a very good mom...

I'd hate to see a woman drinking while pregnant. It's disgusting. It affects so many things in the child...Why would anyone risk the health of their unborn baby? We don't allow people to drink until their 21 in some places. THERE'S A REASON FOR THAT. Would you give you're new born baby/toddler a glass of wine? When you drink, guess what? You're baby drinks too.

I once heard of a woman who was charged with manslaughter because her unborn baby died as a result of her smoking crack cocaine while she was pregnant. She was found not guilty because she was in so much grief from losing her baby. (Ridiculous verdict in my opinion).
