Drinking While Pregnant: OK in Moderation or Not Worth the Risk?

According to five new Danish studies, drinking occasionally while pregnant may not be such a big deal after all.

Researchers took a look at more than 1,600 Danish women and their children, and compared kids born to nondrinkers to those who had mothers who could be categorized as light drinkers (1-4 a week), moderate drinkers (5-8 a week), or heavy drinkers (9+ a week). (Keep in mind that an alcoholic drink in Denmark is defined as 0.4 ounces of pure alcohol compared to 0.6 in the U.S.)

The scientists controlled for outside factors, such as smoking and the mother’s intelligence, and found that light or moderate drinking while pregnant did not have any noticeable impact on a child’s overall IQ, attention span, or self-control. However, the children of heavy drinkers did have considerably shorter attention spans compared to their counterparts.

Despite the growing evidence that light to moderate drinking during pregnancy is harmless, many doctors still strongly discourage the practice.

Dr. Jacquelyn Betrand, representative for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and co-author of three of the studies, told HealthPop: "This study doesn't change our recommendation. We have a long history that alcohol causes birth defects. Drinking during pregnancy is just not worth the risk."

What do you think SodaHeads? Is drinking while pregnant OK in moderation or not worth the risk?

Just don't drink anything heavy; vodka, tequila, or other liquor. Red wine is good for your health anyway, just stick to one glass and don't have it EVERY day.

    Moderation is your friend, people.

(Keep in mind, I'm not promoting drinking while pregnant. I'm just saying it's NOT as big of a deal as long as some idiot doesn't frizock it up by binge-drinking to this news.)

Good question in my opinion it's never worth the risk because it could have affects on your unborn child/or side affects on your child and it could be bad for your health and bad for your unborn child's health.

And it's unhealthy to drink while you are pregnant i don't know how to explain it better if you guys can be my guess and if i think of other reasons why is never OK to drink while you are pregnant I'll be sure to add anymore if i thought of anything else :).

    Key words are "may not".
So still a gamble. Is the well being of the child worth a glass of beer? Yes. Is the well being of the child worth a 1/3 of a gill of whisky? Again yes. Is the child's well being worth a glass of Italian wine? Definitely not.

Its a bad idea. Who are these "researchers"? The same ones that came out saying Mercury is "good" for childrens brains? Or people like Ann Coulter who says that the radiation from Fukushima is good? Plus, normal drinkers can go 9 months without a drink while pregnant. This seems like it will just be used as an excuse for alcholics to justify their drinking.

I did have half of glass of wine when I was about 3 months pregnant and I knew a girl who would have one glass when we went out, so I assume in moderation is fine. Personally, I wouldn't suggest it though.

Ever heard of Fetal Alchohol Syndrome? If youre baby is born with it because of your drinking then you can't change that, ever, and your child will be stuck like that for the rest of their life.

Not to mention that after one of your children is born with FAS it could affect future children, if you get pregnant again then the chances of that baby getting FAS are a lot more likely and just one bottle of beer could cause it the second time.

All three of my aunt's children have FAS and she only drank one beer in the 3rd pregnancy and she greatly regrets her choices now because her children are paying for her mistakes. fetal alchol syndrome

Before the symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are shown by the face, the fetus exposed to alcohol has suffered irreversible neurological damage. Its brain does not tolerate any amount of alcohol.
It seems, for some women, to avoid alcohol is a sacrifice for a few months.
And if it is, do it for a better future with the child!

If she can drink just a little, she must give up, for the baby sake. Nobody knows how much doses are safety for the fetus. Why put an unborn person at risk? F.A.S., F.A.S.D, F.A.E. are the totally preventable syndromes.
If she drinks heavily or often, she needs urgent help.
*** Women : Stop drinking before you decide to have a child! ***
Also during breastfeeding, mothers should not drink alcohol.

    This is comical.
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/06/26 12:34:46
    JayLynx
    I don't think it's comical.
The fetus is always susceptible. Why would the government fight against the consumption of drinking during pregnancy, if it is not a risk? And the cost of treating children born with FAS is high. No one can predict how many doses would be harmless, the alcohol passes quickly through the placenta. The fetus is my son. Why risk it?

FAS is not going to happen due to light/moderate drinking. Other countries, like France and Italy, don't discourage women from light/moderate drinking while pregnant and they have very low cases of FAS.
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/06/26 15:54:46

If a woman drinks just a little bit, she can avoid, but if a woman can not stop to drink, for the safety of her own baby, so I recommend AA.
Nobody knows HOW much a bit of alcohol affects the unborn baby, but it affects. And till now, I will not contradict the scientific research about it. But, if they discourage pregnant woman from drinking, it's because alcohol is a drug.

Can you imagine a mother putting a small glass of wine in the mouth of a little baby?
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/06/26 16:02:04

..."they have very low cases of FAS." But they have.
Be sure that FAS is a set of health impairment, and birth defects, totally preventable .
  • Kae Kam JayLynx 2012/06/26 16:57:09
    Kae Kam
Of course they still have cases of FAS, as some mothers abuse alcohol while pregnant. I'm not saying that over-indulging in alcohol is a good thing while pregnant. Rather, I'm saying light drinking is fine.
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/06/28 14:00:05

So, go for it, do it yourself. I'm reading about FAS, and Births, and Pregnancy, since before I have my first boy. I changed my mind, because I thought that a little bit of alcohol would not cause any damage, etc... Here, I only gave my opinion: Not worth the risk.
Answer me a question: you will put a small amount of wine in the bottle of a baby? And why?
So, it's worst when a mom put alcohol in the unborn's baby blood.
  • Kae Kam JayLynx 2012/06/28 16:27:03
    Kae Kam
My 15 month old daughter steals sips of my wine on occasion. I think it's fine, as it's one sip. So, though I wouldn't put wine in a baby bottle (I don't use bottles), I don't think a small amount would have negative consequences.
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/06/28 16:55:26
    JayLynx
Some consequences we cannot even see, until the child goes to school.
Start letting her sip your wine, and you, as a good mother, will lead her to be an alcoholic person.
By the way, isn't a crime to give some alcohol beverage to a child?
No more words, you will not understand the point.

    Bye, bye.
  • Kae Kam JayLynx 2012/06/30 15:33:55
    Kae Kam
I don't "give" it to her, she's taken it a few times. Also, you can't make someone an alcoholic. You don't understand alcohol and abuse very well.
  • JayLynx Kae Kam 2012/07/01 07:10:03
    JayLynx
If alcohol is a drug, and it is, I don't would let such poison so close of my child.
I know that parents who drink often give the exemple to their children. Then the youth will see that habit as a normal thing to do, to have fun, to relax.
Do what you want, the child is yours, it's your problem. I have 4 children who do not drink, do not use drugs, they are healthy and happy. Thank God, I think I did a good job. I have seen mothers who have taken their children to parties watered on alcohol beverages, and today I see the same (young guys) at the bar. Much in the education of a child is a matter of example, to follow what was taught.
And I'm not to respond to you again. Bye!
