Drinking While Pregnant: OK in Moderation or Not Worth the Risk?

According to five new Danish studies, drinking occasionally while pregnant may not be such a big deal after all.

Researchers took a look at more than 1,600 Danish women and their children, and compared kids born to nondrinkers to those who had mothers who could be categorized as light drinkers (1-4 a week), moderate drinkers (5-8 a week), or heavy drinkers (9+ a week). (Keep in mind that an alcoholic drink in Denmark is defined as 0.4 ounces of pure alcohol compared to 0.6 in the U.S.)

The scientists controlled for outside factors, such as smoking and the mother’s intelligence, and found that light or moderate drinking while pregnant did not have any noticeable impact on a child’s overall IQ, attention span, or self-control. However, the children of heavy drinkers did have considerably shorter attention spans compared to their counterparts.

Despite the growing evidence that light to moderate drinking during pregnancy is harmless, many doctors still strongly discourage the practice.

Dr. Jacquelyn Betrand, representative for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and co-author of three of the studies, told HealthPop: "This study doesn't change our recommendation. We have a long history that alcohol causes birth defects. Drinking during pregnancy is just not worth the risk."

What do you think SodaHeads? Is drinking while pregnant OK in moderation or not worth the risk?

Just don't drink anything heavy; vodka, tequila, or other liquor. Red wine is good for your health anyway, just stick to one glass and don't have it EVERY day.

    Moderation is your friend, people.

(Keep in mind, I'm not promoting drinking while pregnant. I'm just saying it's NOT as big of a deal as long as some idiot doesn't frizock it up by binge-drinking to this news.)

I never drank a full glass of wine or champagne while pregnant, but I did have a couple sips of beer when pregnant with my daughter and sips of wine/champagne with my son (I craved what I had sips of) both of my children are amazing, intelligent and have NO sign of FAS.

My Dr (when I told her what I was craving) is actually the one that suggested I take a couple sips of my husband's or have a very small glass a week if I were craving it. My cousins had to come to my aid during the toasts at our other cousin's wedding because I was hugely pregnant and took tiny sips of champagne after a few of the toasts. My cousins are very big on "A little bit won't hurt" just like I am...some of the other people at the wedding....not so much.

Not worth the risk? As in it's a-ok, but just to be on the safe side?

We've seen ultrasounds from mothers who have had just a little alcohol and the baby was practically convulsing with adverse reactions.

Some people work from all angles to excuse the abuse of pre-born infants.

This seems like the next step in the attack. Someone must have figured pregnant mothers who drink and smoke might hurt the non-human argument for abortion, so it would be easier to say that these things don't hurt the baby while in smaller quantities.

No noticeable impact? Sure. That's the same thing they say about abortion when evidence suggests that abortion does increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. They can manipulate the data to get the results that they want. They're doing it with the 1600 Danish women like they did with abortion.

The least people can do is remain consistent, rather than pandering to the anti-smoking lobby. How this one is juggled I don't know. But stop making excuses, please, and just admit you know what you're doing and have weighed your interests above your baby's.

A woman can drink a bottle of wine throughout her entire pregnancy and have a child with FAS. A woman can go through a 6 pack per week and have a perfectly healthy kid.
It is not worth the risk because the safe amount of alcohol for a pregnant woman has yet to be officially determined. And it probably won't be anytime soon due to lack of volunteers for a substantial study of this nature.

Notice that this study didn't say anything about FAS? How convenient.

"Prenatal alcohol exposure is the cause of fetal alcohol syndrome. A study of over 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy, concluded that consumption of 15 drinks or more per week was associated with a reduction in birth weight.[39] Though consumption of less than 15 drinks per week was not proven to cause FAS-related effects, the study authors recommend limiting consumption to no more than one standard drink per day."

One bottle of wine spread through an entire pregnancy isn't giving anyone FAS.

Bravo. One case study. Unfortunately it has happened. There are numerous studies which have come out with different results. This is why no one knows. One quote from some study which you didn't even reference proves nothing.

Let's reverse things. You show me the study that says one bottle of wine spaced through 40 weeks can cause FAS.

Why would any woman want to take the risk? Put the health of the baby ahead of your own for the term of your pregnancy.

This is just my opinion but it's not worth the chance. I could wait the 9 months to have a drink and smoke because I wanted a healthy baby. It didn't kill me either time.

My Lamaze coach told me that an occaisional glass of wine is ok and that a drink may stop false labor. It seems funny that everyone is losing their minds about this now. My mom drank martinis and smoked all through both of her pregnancies and they seemed to be easier than what my SIL and I went through.

FOR ME I decided it simply wasn't worth the risk but if other women choose to drink in moderation whole pregnant then that's their business!

If you're binge drinking though then you need to have your kid taken away from you!

Okay, Sodahead sucks some times. I put that its not worth the risk, and it says I said okay in moderation. I can't change it, so I'll have to live with it. But I don't think its worth the risk as it can cause fetal alcohol syndrome and other birth defects.

I know some will say now and then is ok...but really, why take the risk...it is so not necessary to drink at all, especially when pregnant...no one really knows if or how much damage it may do....some things show up later in life and then really, they couldn't know...

I don't think it is harmful in true moderation and due to the controversial nature, there aren't a ton of studies on the topic (nor should there be with the heavy drinkers included). The only reason we say it isn't worth the risk is b/c we don't want people to think it is okay to drink heavily during pregnancy and b/c our culture has a tendency to encourage drinking heavily/partying if you aren't pregnant. Maybe if that wasn't so ingrained it wouldn't be a big deal.

Until I hear that there's a BENEFIT to drinking alcohol while pregnant (which I doubt will ever happen), I'm not gonna do it if and when I have a baby. It's your child...don't take risks.

There was a British study done about 2 years ago that was long-term and classified mothers as Non-Drinkers, Casual Drinkers and Heavy Drinkers. They used about 1,500 cases and spread the study over years. Out of the three classified groups, the Casual Drinkers' children scored the highest for behavioral and cognitive reasoning.

I'm not advocating going out and getting sloshed, but the US views alcohol negatively when controlled drinking isn't bad for babies in utero unless it's abusive drinking.

That is quite interesting. I don't think a glass of wine a few times during pregnancy is going to cause any problems, I just wouldn't trust any more than that.

i say ok in moderation but i wouldnt even do that...maybe a glass or two every so often and only if its red wine...smoking cigarettes everyday while with with fetus is way worse than a glass of wine once a week.

One drink at the wrong time can cause a whole host of problems, too, so why risk it? Is it really so difficult to go 9 months without alcohol? If it is, you have a problem.
