Gives most of us a BIT of time to drink under their parents' supervision before going off to college, where face it, most students will drink. Also keeps campus police free to do important things instead of trying to figure out who at what party has a fake ID and is 20 instead of 21. Kids are under parental supervision when alcohol is an illegal taboo, but it is legal, and therefore less taboo, when they leave the home for whatever reason--job, college, ect. Obviously there will be exceptions with, say, those who gradate early, but it makes the taboo less fun and makes it more likely that kids will learn to drink under the supervision of their parents, rather than the supervision of whichever frat scored beer that weekend.

I would say 21 but, the fact is, I'm not sure that young people are any more mature at 21 than they are at 18. I do think that at 18 these kids are still in high school or just graduating and are just getting experienced at driving. A few drinks and an inexperienced driver is a deadly combination as we see all the time on the news. And it's not always an 18 year old. No system or law will keep all drunks off the road.

Why can people get married and go to war, yet are unable to drink when they are already an adult. That is incredibly hypocritical.

I see your point. I was just thinking like a mother who still worries about her kids even now that they're grown and live on their own. I guess I wouldn't want an 18 yr old to go to war or get married either. Way too young. In fact, nobody should have to go to war ever. But you're right. It's just tough for a parent to stop worrying after all those years.

If you can die for your country, vote, live on your own, get married, be charged for a crime as an adult, etc. you can drink. I also think that America should follow the same drinking rules that the UK does. Over there, the legal age to drink is 18, but you can drink at 14 with your parents' permission. I think that's the best way to do it. It teaches the kid how to drink responsibly, and that being able to drink isn't a big deal.

You aren't a fully developed adult until you reach the age of 21.

If you can make the choice to go to war, take a bullet, loose a limb, or die for your country, you should be able to drink. If you are smart enough to vote for the next president , you should be able to drink. If you can go into a store and buy porn, you should be able to have a drink. If you commit a crime and charged as an adult you should be able to drink. If you can purchase a firearm, you should be able to drink. If you can get married and into a legal contract, you should drink.

    Nuff said :)

I think to be allowed drink or not, shouldn't be decided according to age.
Noah was much older than 21 when he got drunk and lay naked in bed. It is not known how old he was at that time, but had grown sons.

I believe there are at least two kinds of people who drink alcoholic beverages: who enjoy drinking and who enjoy getting drunk.

and anyone who argues that a 21 year old or older is somehow magically more responsible is an idiot. At age 18 you can choose to screw up your life in basically any other way but you can't drink? wtf.

There are just as many 40 year olds who don't drink responsibly as there are 18 year olds who would if it was legal for them to drink.

kids are more likely to go crazy with the drinking if they aren't introduced to it before they graduate by their parents.
It's 18 or 19 where I live and It works here so I'm fine with that age.

What is the driving age in America again? I have been terrified to visit America even since Rebecca Friday thing, little girl ruined the good name of Friday (Its Saturday now!) and the safety people feel walking across a road.

A 15 year old, can I ask have you ever drank? (I would not expect no as an answer, but for an American, I make the exception of asking).

Ireland has a major problem with drink Driving, especially in the North (not the English part) were most of my family lives, 7 were killed in one car crash just last summer. I have friends in Donegal, and there attitude towards driving is the scariest part, the fact that they drive extremely dangerously (races on dark roads, drifting etc) while drunk is extremely frightening.

I was only in a crash up there the Christmas before last, I was not hurt, but the girl next to me had her back twisted, nothing too serious shes still walking now.

I could not picture a 15 year old yet to drink, last year I heard about a group of 16 year olds going on the drink for the first time (some very posh kids), they acted worse than 12 year olds on the drink for first time :O

    They were butchered ha

Do 18 years old's not even drink sometime in America?

My granny was the only person ive ever known that old to not drink, and im also certain she was hiding bottles of wine around her house.

And I couldnt imagine trying when I was 15, I always had enough to get drunk. And now ive gone and built up a bloody immunity to it, a bottle of jack will only get me a little drunk for a few hours.

I have to try to get drunk now aswell :(

I am very involved with a night club. My girlfriend owns it. We work there as little as possible. When we are there, we don't drink alcohol.

However, we do work there more than we want to and we both find drunks the most annoying people on earth. It doesn't matter how old you are. Some people can handle drinking and others can't. This is not rocket science. If you want to fight, I will gladly escort you outside and leave you there. If you attempt to come back in...Well, just don't.

If the law says you can't drink until you are 21, you must accept it. I wish it was 16. I wish I could have all the responsible 16 year old's drink at our club, but this would require a PHD and MD in Psychiatry and mind reading-or a very good bartender.

The thing that bothers me the most is underage law breakers and people who enter the club already drunk. I am not your mother. You know how old you are and your condition. When you try to try to sneak into our club and have an illegal drink, you are risking great problems for the owner. We don't want to be named in a lawsuit claiming it was us who over served you. I wish they would understand this.

Until you can legally drink in a bar, please learn the craft at home. You will get more free drinks that way once you turn legal. We appreciate responsible clients.

My man, I understand, I am always in town (night clubs), I always throw house parties, I have been going to the pub since I was a child, and I am investing in my own gig with a night club as a venue.
I am often sober when out, as my capacity for drink, is definitely on the strong side (I regularly drink 70cl of Jack without even getting drunk, I drink at my own pace) and being sober, I have analyzed every part of the behaviour of drunk people.

Could we please move this conversation into mail, I have some questions I would like to ask you, as I can see already you are definitely on the same page as me, do not be surprised I am only 18, I have been made aware that I am highly intellectual. I am interested in hearing more about your ideals on the behaviour of alcohol and also, in your night club.

I am 61. Never had a DUI or OWI or whatever they want to call them. Gin and Cognac are my preferences. I drink less and less as time goes on. I never drank alcohol everyday. Ever. My favorite drink is fresh lemon squeezed in water blended with agave nectar and crushed ice. Hopefully served with flat grilled seasoned cod and veggies sprayed with olive oil.

Problem drinkers abound. Are club owners part of the problem? You have to reconcile that in your own mind. People are social beings. Clubs and bars are social enterprises. Loneliness is the saddest if human conditions. For some reason alcohol seems to help people cope with this condition.

Jack Daniels is rationed at our club. No one gets more than two drinks with it at our place. Wild Turkey same rules. I can't figure out why those two brands raise red flags more than any other call. Be careful with the stuff. You have nothing to gain by consuming it in great quantity. Fatherly advice.

Am I glad I spent a considerable portion of my life running clubs? No.

You are 18. Find a better profession. This one gets old because people are getting crazier.

Of course in the UK it is 18, but under supervision, bring it in early and drive respect for the actual and very real 'gateway drug'.
