Dozens Burned in Tony Robbins Firewalk: Would You Ever Try Firewalking?

Last week, dozens of attendees of a Tony Robbins motivational event were burned while participating in a firewalk. Advocates of the “confidence-building” practice argue that it’s not dangerous when done properly. But we’re pretty sure that any exercise that involves walking across burning coals can never be entirely risk-free.

At least 21 people were treated for burn injuries outside the San Jose Convention Center. Many more sought medical attention after leaving the venue. Some participants reported hearing “wails of pain, screams of agony.”

Apparently, participants in Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within” event were warned that firewalking could be dangerous if they were not in the right state of mind. They were told to focus on the power within and avoid looking down. However, many scientists say that state of mind has nothing to do with it. “Rather, it is the short time of contact and the low thermal capacity and conductivity of the coals that is important," says physics instructor David Wiley.

Firewalkers sometimes get burned if they stay on the coals for too long, if they run, if their feet are wet, or if the coals have not burned long enough. It’s unclear whether any of these factors contributed to the injuries at the Tony Robbins event.

Tony Robbins' organization released a statement saying: "We have been safely providing this experience for more than three decades. We continue to work with local fire and emergency personnel to ensure this event is always done in the safest way possible."

So, what about you SodaHeads? Would you ever try firewalking?

It's much easier to walk on burning charcoal than to walk on Lego blocks.

But at least with the Lego blocks you shouldn't have to worry about burning your feet. I don't know. Just saying. I've never tried walking on Lego blocks either so I don't know just how hard it would be.

Do you have kids? Kids tend to leave the damn things laying around on the floor and you get up in the middle of the night or you walk in their room to check on them and step on a lego & try your hardest not to scream at the top of your lungs from the pain & wake up the heathen that left it laying there LOL

Hahahahahaha! Love the chart! LOL! To answer your question? Yes, I've got 2 kids that are now all grown up.(my daughter has 2 munchkins of her own.) I can tell you something that is unbelievably painful is stepping on a jack. Have you ever played jacks? I can tell you this much, I stepped on one when I was in the 6th grade and broke the darned thing! Whooooieeee! Now "that" was some kind of painful I can tell you! ball and jacks

I don't recall ever stepping on a jack but I did step on a needle one & yes it did go in my foot...at least I didn't do as bad as my Mom, the needle broke off in her foot & never did get removed, mine only went partially in. I've also stapled my own finger, by accident lol

Ouch! I stepped on a nail one time by accident. I can tell you that little begger was tough trying to pull out. I was wearing my shoes at the time so I had to pull that ole nail out of my foot and the sole of my shoe too! I hobbled around for a couple weeks over that little bit of business. I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade at the time.

Oh yeah, And that thing hurt like bloody heck too! LOL! In all seriousness I think maybe the nail was a better deal. At least it didn't break off so it could be pulled out o.k. I don't know. I think maybe the needle would have been worse somehow. It's all painful just the same

Agreed. Let's just hope that neither I nor you, have to experience the other! Also, I once cut my hand open on some glass that was old & dusty & had to have a tetanus shot...I'd say, that hurt worse than cutting my hand..by far. (hope no one who reads this is freaked out by needles) :/

I hear that o.k. I've had my share of accidents to where I've needed stitches. Not fun at all. I've got a lovely little scar across my left wrist due to putting my hand thru our basement window back in 86. That stupid window didn't want to shut. Never did figure out why but it was being a pain. Well, I was trying to be gentle about it but there was no real place to put my hands so I put one hand on the glass and tried shutting the window. Well, you guessed it. That blasted window broke and my hand went thru it. I've got a nice 2 inch scar for my efforts. It took 6 stitches.

Ouchie! Palm or outer hand? The glass I cut mine on was my own stupidity but regardless, when it stuck in my hand is was just this relatively small but thick square of glass. When I pulled the chunk of glass out it was like a geyser, blood everywhere. So at the ER I find out I hit the main tendon in my hand. that little thing, turned into surgery two days later, something like 16 stitches, 6wks in a sling/brace crap whatever it was, and my ring finger on that hand is messed up, crooked. And now I have this very pretty Frankenstein looking zig zag in my hand :/

Ouch! WOW! Sorry to hear that. In my case the glass actually cut my wrist and nicked a tendon but other than cleaning out the wound and getting my stitches I was o.k. Had some tendon problems for awhile but it all healed up over time. Yeah, I've had my share of stitches over time mostly due to my own stupidity. LOL! Ah well, the way I look at it the scars just give you character. :-)

Thankfully aside from that & some surgeries I don't have any other accidental scars from stitches (knock on wood). And have never broken a bone (knock on wood HARDER) LOL

Any time sweet lady. Yeah, when I think so some of the really stupid things I've done in my life I'm real surprised I'm still here to laugh about it. And as far as the broken bones?? I don't recommend that either. I fractured my neck back in 06 and had to have a plate put in my neck to stabilize the fracture. The funny thing of it though is that I can now say I don't have to worry about losing my head as it's screwed on tight! Hehehehe!

Each of my three daughters have broken bones! One an arm, one nearly snapped her ankle in half (surgery w/screws to hold the bones together) and my youngest joined the broken bone club this Easter by breaking her wrist! Watching them, especially my daughter that had her leg in a cast, I will pass! So what in the world did you do to yourself that caused you to fracture your neck? And good thing it's on tight! Because like most of us, we lose it daily ;-)

WOW! Sounds like the younguns are having quite the rough and tumble life there. My grand daughter has already broken 2 different bones from falling down and all and she's only 5 right now so she's been getting crash tested. :-( Concerning my neck??? Oddly enough I was plowing snow at the time. Most of the crew was out in mall parking lot clearing the snow(this was Dec. 1st. of 06) and I was in the back between the buildings with a combination tractor removing snow. Well, I was making a pass with the tractor and unbeknownst to me there was a manhole under the ice and snow and it was sticking up about 3 inches because the asphalt was eaten away around it. Well, as I was making that pass I hit that manhole with the bucket and it brought that tractor to a dead halt. I wasn't belted in so what happened is I came out of the seat and slammed into the steering wheel with the top of my head and causing an impact fracture. That was not a good night for me. I'd already burned up the clutch on my truck plowing and then got the company dump truck stuck so the whole day was a bad day for me. I'm pretty much o.k. now but I tend to get headaches and dizzy spells from time to time.

Goodness gracious, it's a miracle you're even still alive! You had those injuries & you were worried about the company dump truck? I don't think so! lol Well glad that get you all fixed up, not surprised by the headaches & dizzy spells. A relatively small price to pay in comparison to what could have been, correct? Wishing the best for your lil' sweet one!

Many thanks me lady. Yeah, getting my neck broke was kind of the icing on the proverbial crud cake. LOL! Yep, the day started out with me burning up my clutch and half way thru the day is when I got the dump truck stuck. It wouldn't have been so bad but I was pulling up an ice packed hill with the trailer behind me(the tractor pictured above is the tractor I was taking to the mall) and there was traffic behind me. Oh yeah, I'll never forget "that" day! LOL! The headaches and occasional dizzy spells are a nuisance for sure but like you said it beats the alternative. I got lucky. Many thanks for the well wishes sweet lady. I also wish you and yours the very best too!

URGH! No sir! I think I don't want to do that either. Just my fool luck I'll step on one and run that bugger all the way up into my foot. For the folks that can do that without injury, my hat's off to them but I don't want to try it myself. I've got waaaaayyyyy too many scars on me due to nutty things I've done in the past.
