Does Using Internet Explorer as Your Web Browser Mean You're Dumb?

Are you using Internet Explorer to browse this post? You might not be the brightest bulb in the pack.

According to AptiQuant, a Canada-based "psychometric consulting" firm that provides hiring exams for businesses, Internet Explorer users scored the worst on online IQ tests they gave to more than 100,000 people, PCWorld reports.

On average, Internet Explorer users performed the worst, with IE6 users scoring as the "dumbest" and IE8 users doing slightly better.

Firefox, Chrome and Safari users fell in the middle with little difference between them.

IE with Chrome Frame and Camino users did the best, along with Opera users, who scored the highest.

"The study showed a substantial relationship between an individual's cognitive ability and their choice of web browser," AptiQuant concluded. "From the test results, it is a clear indication that individuals on the lower side of the IQ scale tend to resist a change/upgrade of their browsers."

Offensive as it may be, this story makes sense to us. The smartest (and geekiest) people we know tend to use browsers like Chrome and Opera. IE does seem to be meant for the person who does not keep up with the latest and greatest things going on in the tech world, and can't be bothered to change with the times.

We're partial to Safari, which puts us in the middle of the pack. Hey, it beats being at the bottom!

Why would you be dumb for using IE ? Some people just don't care about the web browser they use. If you don't use your computer that much, why would you bother downloading the latest one?

I enjoy IE, but I also enjoy using other sites. The company I use for outsourced cfo services runs the best on internet explorer. Some sites don't run as well on other web browsers, so I think it depends what you're doing.

most people who use internet explorer do so not out of choice but because they are unaware there is an alternative. this is often due to ignorance, they are the kind of person who doesn't want to broaden their mind and learn anything and therefore are likely to perform badly on IQ test.

It's a matter of preference. My hubby uses IE. I hate it, and use Firefox.

Using Internet Explorer as your web browser means you are NOT dumb. Internet Explorer is the only browser that is supported by most ActiveX applications, as well as the only browser with gpu accelerated page rendering, and is also the only browser written in full 64bit. Using any other Web Browser means you are dumb.

You can manipulate statistics to prove any statement you want to. I could ask people if they like a new design until four say yes, include one "no" answer, and hey presto, 80% of my survey group like the new design! They just want to advertise all these new browsers. Chrome, IE, Opera, a clever person can use IE6 and a dumb person can use Opera, makes no difference!

Not everyone cares about the web browser they use. Not everyone needs some high-technology web browser. Some people just need to check their email. And I honestly don't think that IE is that bad.

I personally think that IE is horrible. You may not be dumb if you use IE but you are not technologically adventuresome. Try any of the others if you haven't and I bet you will see a difference.

I say yes only because I don't like anything that tries to force me into a certain thing. I use Goggle but even that bugs me at times, when it brings up sites it gets paid to show. Basically I go right to the company or person I want to see.

If you aren't interested in your own internet security you are dumb and should remain with Internet Explorer. I use Firefox and will remain with Firefox. If I go to a web site that is so poorly designed that it must use Internet Explorer the competition will be the one to get my business.

sort of a dumb question, i prefer firefox, but have called for tech help for some necessary sites, (financial institutions) and been told i must use explorer for proper display.

i am not a tech expert, but when i switched to IE. things worked, so at least at that time, on that day, for that site, it seemed smarter to use explorer.

As far as Safari, my wife uses it on her Apple computer, I find it a little more difficult to navigate, but probably am just not used to it.

many years ago our tech guy (now CFO) at the office told us we better begin to use MS-DOS and microsoft in general. I argued because it seemed more expensive, so i thought it would not prevail. obviously he was a lot smarter than me. BTW, decades later, he remains smarter.

I reluctantly answered yes, but I think "ignorant" or "willfully ignorant" would be better. Ignorant of the fact that IE has so many security holes and prone to so many virus and privacy attacks, especially if you are still using IE 6. Trusting Microsoft to protect you is worse than trusting the Federal Government.
