Does This Photo Shoot Glamorize Violence?

This might be one of the most disturbing, distasteful things we’ve ever seen. A Bulgarian fashion magazine recently featured a photo shoot of models who appear bloodied, bruised, slashed, punched and burnt, with the tagline, “Victim of Beauty.”

violence

But if the images make you think of domestic violence, the editor-in-chief of 12 Magazine says that’s your own sick mind at work. “This shoot was left without an introductory text, thus allowing everybody to translate it the way they want,” editor-in-chief Huben Hubenov told The New York Daily News. “A lot of people read ‘domestic violence’ in those pictures, but it is their mind who came up with that explanation of the shoot, not ours."

violence

Hubenov adds: “And if they took the time to actually examine the photographs, instead of superficially jumping to [conclusions], they would’ve seen girls who look at us strongly, who look confident, who are above the wounds, above everything. They are independent.”

violence

Others strongly disagree. “Violence against women exists way too frequently in real life for us to want to look at it in a fashion magazine,” blogger Cheryl Wischhover wrote on Fashionista, joining a chorus of other outraged bloggers. However, some readers called the shoot beautiful and “thought-provoking.” What do you think? Do these photos glamorize violence?

Not everything that shows a given phenomenon "glamorizes" it. Sometimes it's just to, "raise awareness".

You can't glamorize violence because it is a disgusting thing we need to avoid and making pictures like these can influence people to do it more by making it sound glamorous!

Think about it, men often have scars on their face are are still considered attractive or strong looking, survivors etc. But the second a woman's face gets bruised or injured, she's no longer considered beautiful by our standards.

What if you are a woman who has gotten acid thrown on your face and everyone considers you a monster now? Ads showing models with scars might make those who have scars feel more accepted and normal. It's not glamorizing it, just saying that it's okay to not to be perfect.

to see women all made up after such a serious abuse is discussing. it makes them look like they are wearing it like some bagde of honour out on the town.

had these photos shown them as they were just after the abuse it would have made much more impact on how horrible violance is and reasons why we shold do what we can to see an end to such volgar acts towards other humans women, men or even children. this really is sickening

I think it's showing that no matter how beautiful or glamorous you may be, violence can still happen to you.

I think it shows that no matter how a woman acquires a vicious injury, whether physical, psychological, or otherwise, she is strong and powerful enough to be independent, confident, and hold her head high, fully at ease with this strength amd power, and she is beautiful with all her scars. Oddly, people react negatively to scars (as in these posts). It's a brilliant test of the viewer. I see strength and beauty, resilience.

What the hell is wrong with the world's desire for everyone to find violence in everything? Are we really so desperate for scapegoats when our kids screw up instead of taking responsibility or just admitting that they are just wired that way?

I mean those bruises could've been the result of an accident ! It's the way i interpret those pictures, even with the bruises and the scars, they look beautiful. It's a very beautiful message to me.

Sorry, but, a woman that looks way to skinny with loads of cuts on her face? That's just plain weird, for a photo shoot anyways...

When I think of something being glamorized, I think of something that is trying to be advertised, something that is supposed to come across as desirable or good.

Based on these pictures...I think it's trying to do the opposite. Nobody would desire to look like that....

I don't find the pictures attractive and much less glamorous, unless black and blue lessions and gashes and cuts is what turns you on, it sure doesn't on my end.

If this is the latest trend in the media like justin bieber and lady gaga glamorising violence then it is ridiculous and gives confusing message to young people. If it is for artistic reasons protesting against violence on women maybe they should be more clear and call it victim of violence not promoting beauty

I dont think that this is about abuse. It's titled "victims of beauty" so they are literally the victims of beauty. Whether it's self inflicted or not, it all came from this superficial thing that we call beauty. This want to be so beautiful and glamorous silently kills and hurts us. So I think that this photo shoot is showing us that. That's just my opinion though.

When I looked at them, they looked kind of like female fighters, not abuse victims. Look at their eyes. They're not frightened, they look strong willed and independent. That screams "fighter," not "abused." I mean, I guess it can glorify fighting or whatever, but it also conveys a juxtaposition of violence with beauty and makes an interesting statement.

i perceive this photo shoot to be a bold, powerful statement against violence towards women. it shows some intense, evident, physical pains that soo many women probably face in real life right now...and it shows awareness

We should make the next "in" thing to be overweight because most of North America would be considered cool then. Bulimia and anorexia are serious yes but obesity is more of an epidemic than they are.

Or parents could teach/allow their children to think for themselves, express themselves freely, and they wouldn't be concerned with trendy and cool. They'd be forging their own path. But sadly, a lot of parents feel safer raising "follower/do as I say" children. Problem is, followers follow, which would be OK sometimes if it weren't so blindly that they do so. But parents WILL lose control of who's the leader, and then blame the leader for "leading them astray", when they should blame themselves for not raising an independent thinker.

Not at all. It's actually quite an artistic movement. It shows them all beautiful with their makeup on, but then something so ugly as domestic abuse takes over that beauty. If anything, it's awareness.

This is one of the worst things I have seen in my entire life, many many years ago the person who put this in a magazine would be stoned. It was a very barbaric way but back then most people saw women as beautfiul people who needed to be protected and cared for while knowing what she wants, now they are putting images like this in magazines. Its about two steps back in civility for people.
