Does This Photo Shoot Glamorize Violence?

This might be one of the most disturbing, distasteful things we’ve ever seen. A Bulgarian fashion magazine recently featured a photo shoot of models who appear bloodied, bruised, slashed, punched and burnt, with the tagline, “Victim of Beauty.”

violence

But if the images make you think of domestic violence, the editor-in-chief of 12 Magazine says that’s your own sick mind at work. “This shoot was left without an introductory text, thus allowing everybody to translate it the way they want,” editor-in-chief Huben Hubenov told The New York Daily News. “A lot of people read ‘domestic violence’ in those pictures, but it is their mind who came up with that explanation of the shoot, not ours."

violence

Hubenov adds: “And if they took the time to actually examine the photographs, instead of superficially jumping to [conclusions], they would’ve seen girls who look at us strongly, who look confident, who are above the wounds, above everything. They are independent.”

violence

Others strongly disagree. “Violence against women exists way too frequently in real life for us to want to look at it in a fashion magazine,” blogger Cheryl Wischhover wrote on Fashionista, joining a chorus of other outraged bloggers. However, some readers called the shoot beautiful and “thought-provoking.” What do you think? Do these photos glamorize violence?

The only violence this brings about in my mind is what I would do to the guys who would do this sort of thing to women.

I mean, I think it's does glamorize violence, which it does because they have these gorgeous models with bruises scrapes and burns on their faces and necks, so it's like they were trying to make violence beautiful, or it almost seemed like violence awareness to me

When I saw it I interpreted it as violence awareness I guess. I don't think it's exactly saying violence is beautiful, but that victims of crimes shouldn't hide in shame. You know?

The "Victim of Beauty" says a lot. I interpret it as a jab at plastic, superficial aspects of culture. This, I think is meant to show how women destroy themselves in their attempt to be beautiful in the eyes of society. I also see women who are secure and confident despite their injuries. But then, you could also imagine a dystopian world where scars and burns are all the rage, and these are the faces of women who are actually satisfied with their "new look." One could say that the injuries symbolize plastic surgery, but I don't have such a literal interpretation.

    i think it's a bit disturbing...

the fact that all the pictures are of middle aged women, and the time period we live in now, it does kind of lead you to the conclusion of thinking about domestic violence

I agree with the person who made the photographs. He gave a reason and asked for non-superficial judgement when he didn't get it. He explained everything clearly and tried tog et his message accross clearly. Hence, I agree with him.

Who says injured women can't look beautiful and confident?

I've seen domestic violence on my own sister, and I wouldn't want her hanging her head because of it. She used her marks to show people her situation (and she made sure the guy's family knew as well), and actions were taken against him--he was banned from where she works, among other things.

It is a play on words with an image.
It should not be taken any other way besides the out there fashion magazine idea.

Can u imagine being beaten nd when u look at this it will either remind u or upset u because u either went through or have been through tht. I still think its a bit sick tht u would want tht sort of thing in a fashion mag. :S there is another point about it, all models are beautiful nd really pretty but scars nd tht take most of tht away nd u never see a model with scars. & <3 to all who have/r suffered/suffering from abuse nd to all those who have died from it RIP :'(

    "Glamorize"
    ...
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Because as far as I can see it, it's showing a bunch of beautiful injured women who are trying to stay strong through tough times. It has an underlying feeling of sadness, in the defiant eyes.

    This is not glamorized.

I have mixed feelings about this. It disturbs me because I grew watching my mom and her friends being beaten, then I was a victim of domestic violence myself. So of course seeing these brings back bad memories.

On the other hand, these women could also be warriors and these could be depicting battle injuries. I think this is open to interpretation.

edited because I clicked the wrong answer.

This is art...there is supposed to be a reaction. I like art that makes me feel and think..whether its positive or negative. As long as no people or animals are being harmed for real though.

Not really what REALLY glamorizes violence are those shooting games some teens play nowadays like Call of Duty.

The message is many-fold, it highlights the violence against women at a societal and personal level. Physical beauty is ephemeral and once you lose it you aren't valued as highly by an inherently misogynistic society that's obsessed with superficiality. How much are we willing to sacrifice to achieve the impossible ideal that's being foistered upon us? One could even say that the mutilation of the models is also a metaphor for some PS procedures. Another message is that a pretty face is no guarantee against abuse by a partner. Domestic violence is a widespread problem that affects people from all walks of life. If it saddens you more to see a comely model with fake injuries than an average woman with real ones...you too are part of the problem.

If this looks glamourous to you, then you need therapy. It's art! Hello! It's supposed to be thought-provoking. To me, it makes a statement about how violence is sad and disturbing, how it is anything but glamorous. Look at the models... They are beautiful, except for the bruises and wounds. Makes you sad that a gorgeous creature can be mutilated by some a-hole for no reason. What right did the perpetrator have to take this woman's beauty? What right did he/she have to harm her like that? You don't see images like these very often, so you don't know what violence looks like. These photos give a face to the stories you hear about terrible evil. They need to be seen. By seeing it, you can better understand what it means to be a victim of violence. It's supposed to evoke a gut reaction. It makes you want to stop it. Sweeping things under the rug allows then to continue.

With Chris Brown's violent acts being swept under the rug, (women saying things like "oh he can beat me anytime". An editorial like this seems to be the next logical step in the destruction of our youth.

Anyway, art (pictures) can mean anything you want it to mean. None of them are smiling so I wouldn't say it glamorizes violence against women. Without background, I would say that the pictures were a way to say how people who have been wounded mentally or physically can get back up and still be beautiful.

This photo shoot is from a man who hates women and wants to do violence to them. It is as simple as that. I can see those shots anytime in a police file, which I am sure that is where he got his inspiration.

ohh gettng off on the ole brusied women there ole boy? I am sure you are. You don't share my view? A person wanting to do violence to women would not.

lol I Should hope my view says more about me, I can see it for what it is, a person who hates women and enjoys the violence done to them. And theat view dear is shared by more then your view. But the only view you enjoy is black and blue.
